John Glancy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27, 2024.
Phoenix - John James Glancy, 82, passed away on January 11, 2024, in Phoenix Arizona. He was born in 1941 to Leta and J.J. Glancy in Kingman, Arizona. He was raised in Kingman and graduated from MCHS, before moving to Phoenix, where he spent the majority of his life. He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Mike and Charlie, and his sister Mary Stephenson. He is survived by sisters Kathleen Glancy, Anne Collins, and Mert Glancy, his brother Richard Glancy, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

John earned bachelor's and master's in civil engineering from the University of Arizona and a PhD in structural engineering from Arizona State University. He enjoyed watching the athletic events for both schools, but he loved to engage in the rivalry banter between the two even more. He was a well-respected professor of engineering at ASU and spent many years as a structural engineer at Marathon Steel. Eventually he started his own business, Glancy Engineering, where he worked until retirement on some of the most iconic projects, including stadiums for the Suns and Cardinals. He employed his niece and several nephews, guiding and inspiring them along the way. He valued his education and was always willing to share his knowledge with others, serving as a very patient educator and role model. John was very involved in the engineering community , including serving as President of the Structural Engineers Association of Arizona.

John closely followed nearly all professional sports and enjoyed going to games. He attended the tennis matches during Spring Break in Indian Wells for many years. He would text out weekly sports reports to family and friends to celebrate the achievements of his favorite athletes. As much as he enjoyed professional sports, he enjoyed attending the athletic events of his nieces and nephews more, and routinely took amazing pictures and videos to highlight their achievements.

He was known for his quick wit and humor, amazing memory, and kindness that made even the most random stranger feel like a welcome part of his family. Having so many nieces and nephews that adored him, he embraced the title "Uncle", that was placed on him by many people, even some that were not related. After being inspired by "40 shades of green", John was also known for integrating all 40 shades and more into his wardrobe and proudly displaying his favorite color.

John was a longtime parishioner of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, and his services will be held there on February 9th, 2024, at 10am.

I remember that "Uncle" (as we knew him) came to events and sports games of his nieces and nephews at St. Vincent de Paul. He was always there to support them and cheer them on!

John and I were at U of A together in the 1960´s and both ended up in Phoenix. In 1981 John designed the footings for my big sculpture across from the ball park at 7th Street and Jefferson ("Hyperbolic Ellipsoid") and a year later he programed the plasma cutter at Marathon to cut out the sculpture that is located one block to the north at 7th Street and Washington ("Parabolic Spiral"). Photos included.
Even when there was a year or more between our conversations, when we got together again it was like only a day or two had passed and we picked up right where we had left off. We worked together for the last time early last summer when he helped me with a solar structure design. He was the same as ever: knowable, competent, helpful, understated and blessed with a great sense of humor. While my cumulative time with John was limited, he will remain in my memory as a genuinely good human being and someone I always valued and enjoyed.
