Dr. John Russell Griffin was born on July 23, 1958 in Denison, Texas, to parents John and Beverly Griffin, and passed away on June 19, 2018. He was fondly called "Dr. G" or "Doctor John" by those who knew him, and to know him was to love him.
After graduating high school he attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas and recieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology in May 1980. He then pursued his dream and recieved his Medical Degree from University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in May 1985. John continued his residency in Internal Medicine at UTMB, and then specialized in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases.
In 1990, John and his wife Mary made their home in the The Woodlands, after he became a partner in Montgomery County Lung Clinic. He then joined the Medical Staff at Conroe Regional Medical Center where he practiced Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine. The Intensive Care Unit and his patients were his passion. He was a mentor, friend, and father figure to many, especially the "Royal Blue Crew" whom he fiercely loved. John positively impacted the lives of everyone who knew him and left an indelible mark. He loved being a physician and often joked he may never retire. Outside of medicine he enjoyed many hobbies, loved spending time with his children, powerlifting, and was a "wine enthusiast".
John was preceded in death by his father John Timothy Griffin. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Nicole, sons Jordan and Noah, mother Beverly Griffin, sister Sherrie Lofland, brother Barry Griffin and his wife Lori, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was Chief of Staff at Conroe Regional Medical Center, Medical Director of the ICU, Chief Medical Officer of Cornerstone Hospital and has held various executive offices and served on multiple committees throughout his career.
A celebration of John's life will be held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Harvest Sanctuary, on June 29th, 2018, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the John Griffin MD Memorial Scholarship Fund at Montgomery County Medical Society. P.O. Box 133067, The Woodlands, TX 77393.

Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

Dear Mary,
Your beloved John is in Heaven experiencing the infinite love of God. He truly was a gifted physician and great husband and father. I enjoyed discussing golf with him and viewed him as the best that Medicine has to offer. I share your pain every day until I die and know that on one special day we will all see John again.

Dr. G's generosity, knowledge, and bedside manner surpassed any other. We met when he volunteered to see me while I didn't have insurance. There truly is no other doctor, or person, like Dr. Griffin. He saved my life, not just by keeping me alive but for changing my life as well. He was definitely a father figure to me, reassuring me when I was scared but also told me when I was being ridiculous. My life will not be the same without him. He will never be forgotten by myself or my family.
I can't begin to imagine the heartache his family is going through, and no words could ever lessen the pain they are experiencing.
The world has lost a great soul. Godspeed Dr. G. You will be deeply missed.

My deepest condolences to the family. I'm honored and grateful that I had an opportunity to work with Dr. Griffin in ICU. He was great with his patients and the staff. Anyone that met him loved and respected the man and the physician. He's truly the best critical care doctor I've ever worked with in 30 years of nursing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family for God's peace and understanding at this time. He will be missed!!

Linda and I send our deepest sympathies to the family. John graced my laboratory as a research technician, his first job out of college and prior to his entering medical school at UTMB. I considered him a colleague and dear friend.
