GRIFFIN, John J. Age 83, passed away at home, peacefully on March 26, 2022. Born December 8, 1938, the son of Alice Rita (Lyons) and Dennis Joseph Griffin formerly of Quincy, Randolph and
Hull, MA. John attended St. Patrick's School in Brockton, MA and then Boston College High School, class of 1956. Following BC High, John enlisted in the US Navy Reserve and completed 2 years of active duty, primarily assigned to CVA-16 USS Lexington. Upon completion of active duty, John remained enlisted in the Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of Photographers Mate Chief Petty Officer. In 1970, John received a direct commission and promotion to LTJG, as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Upon further promotion to Commander, John transferred to the Engineering Duty Officer Program where he advanced to the rank of Captain and served two tours as Commanding Officer of EDO Units until his retirement from the Navy at age 60. John attended Stonehill College, graduating with a B.S. in Biology. Furthering his education, John earned Master's Degrees in both Chemistry and Education as well as Doctorate of Chemistry from Boston College. Dr. Griffin was an educator for the majority of his career, teaching in the communities of Hull, Hanover and Westwood, where he spent 20 years as the Chairman of the Science Department. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sheila (West); and his four children, daughter Sarah (Griffin) and husband Richard Gay, Daniel, John, Patrick and his wife Molly (McCarthy); as well as nine grandchildren; Alicenne, Anna and Emily Gay, Bethany, Grace and Thomas Griffin, Marguerite, Evelyn and Patrick Griffin; his sister Alice (Griffin) Chase; brother D. Joseph Griffin and wife Ellen (Driscoll), mother-in-law Ruth (Clark) West; brother-in-law Thomas West and wife Wendy (Devine) as well as several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Alice Rita (Lyons) and Dennis Joseph Griffin, his brother Daniel W. Griffin, granddaughter Abigail Gay, father-in-law Thomas T. West and brother-in-law Joseph E Chase. John loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending as many sports and extracurricular activities as possible and helping them with homework. He enjoyed spending days at the beach and swimming in the ocean, Craigville Beach was one of his favorites. John had a lifelong love affair with cameras and photography. John will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 1st at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 58 Carpenter Street, Foxborough.
