PIQUA — John L. Grunkemeyer, 67, of Piqua, went to be with the Lord at 1:12 p.m. Sunday July 13, 2014 at Wexner Medical Center, Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He was born in Piqua on Jan. 9, 1947, to the late George L. Grunkemeyer and Grace C. (Groff) Grunkemeyer of Piqua, and she survives. He married Diane Mumaw on Nov. 7, 1970, in Piqua at St. Boniface Church. She survives.
John is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John "J.J." and Shaundra Grunkemeyer, Piqua; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Lewis Kurzawa, Piqua; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Roseanne Grunkemeyer, Piqua and George (Mike) and Vickie Grunkemeyer, Piqua; one sister and brother-in-law, Maryann and Dewaine Stephan, Russia; father and mother-in-law, Dorothy and Edward Mumaw; seven grandchildren, Megan and Tyler Welborn, John Grunkemeyer III, Kyrstan Mikolajewski, Zoe Grunkemeyer, Emma Grunkemeyer, and Dylan Kurzawa; one great-granddaughter, Racheal Grunkemeyer.
John graduated from Piqua Catholic High School in 1966. He was a member of St. Boniface Church, Piqua. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 serving in Vietnam from 1968-1969. John was also a member of the Piqua American Legion Post 184, Piqua VFW Post 4874, life member of the Covington Amvets Post 66, and the Fraternal Order of the Moose in Gas City, Ind. John worked at French Oil in Piqua for 23 years as a Maintance Mill Wright. He also retired from B.F. Goodrich in 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, at St. Boniface Church, Piqua with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Bolte Celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua. Full military honors will be presented by The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Rd., Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.melcher-sowers.com.
