John Haines Obituary

John "Jack" D. Haines
June 18, 1929 - September 24, 2022
Wichita, Kansas - Jack Haines passed away peacefully with family by his side September 24, 2022 at St. Francis hospital. He was 93 years old.
Our beloved Jack was a very kind man with a huge heart and a passion for people. He was generous to numerous charities throughout his life. He was devoted to his wife and family, friends and neighbors, the Lutheran Church, a very successful career with the JC Penney Company, and his home and gardens.
Born in Livingston, Montana, Jack grew up an only child in a very loving household. He served in the Montana National Guard before marrying Mavis Engen, the love of his life. His father had hopes for him to pursue college, but Jack had his sights set on a career in flight. When weather and timing didn't pan out, he sought temporary work at a small retail clothing store, JC Penney's. Little did he know it would blossom into a lifelong management career that moved Jack and family to Mandan, North Dakota, McCook, Nebraska, Pueblo, Colorado, St Joseph, Missouri, and finally Wichita, Kansas where he retired. He was a huge dog lover and is greeted in heaven by Sam, Wiggy, Waggy, and Taffy and surrounded by loved ones who left us before him. He maintained his desire to fly as a hobby and was an avid private and glider pilot. He won multiple awards in flying competitions. He loved fly fishing in Montana and Wyoming and had taken his family on many fishing adventures. He was a great storyteller. He was a talented water color artist and a consistent supporter of the arts in Kansas. He will be missed dearly.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mavis Haines (Engen), parents Keith and Marguerite (MacDonald), and grandson Andrew Haines. He is survived by son Craig and daughter-in-law Denice (Nunemaker), grandsons Keenan and Ross Haines, nephews Tom and Al Hogg, niece Christine Arthun (Hogg), cherished dog, Zonie, and friends.
We would like to thank his friends, neighbors, caretakers, Regent Park, Azria Health, and St. Francis Hospital for all of your love, thoughts, and prayers. A funeral service will be held later in Livingston, Montana. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to a local charity or to the Mavis L. Haines Family Fund of ASPEN in Livingston, MT.

I met Jack and Mavis while in nursing school in Kansas. I had the wonderful opportunity of being both a carregiver and quickly becomimg a friend as well. Jack and Mavis were two of the most loving, giving, caring people I have ever had the privilege to know. They truly were each other's best friend and soul mate. It was humbling to witness their life together. Jack felt like the grampa I never had. Jack was quick to give advise, if he thought he saw something in you. Always willing to help those that wanted to help themselves. Even those who could not ever give back. I will miss both of them terribly. R.I.P you two. I hope the Starbucks up there is amazing!

Jack was a very kind man. Laurie and I met him shortly after moving into Wilderness Estates over 20 years ago. Jack and Mavis would be out for their daily drive and would always stop by if they saw us in the front yard. They always had nice compliments about our work on our home. We spoke to Jack many times on the phone to answer any questions he had, we enjoyed helping him whenever he needed it. Rest in peace Jack, you're with your beloved Mavis now. You will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. Frank & Laurie Priest

So sorry for your loss. He was the first manager I worked for when I started at JCPenney in Wichita, Ks. In the 32 yrs. I worked at JCP., he was my favorite. So kind and generous. He will be missed.
