JOHN A. HAMILTON (Age 84)
An Emmy Award-winning journalist and founder of Hamilton Productions, died peacefully on June 7, 2014. He was a former member of the editorial board of The New York Times and transitioned to television forming a family company to launch PBS's "Watch On Washington" series. New York Magazine called him "a media renaissance man." The Village Voice described him as "the secret mayor of New York". His editorials and columns won The New York Publisher's Award, National Headliners Award and the Ernie Pyle Award. His writing during the urban riots for The Detroit Free Press in 1967 was honored with a Pulitzer Prize. His wife of 52 years, Nancy Bradsher Hamilton, died in 2007. Survivors include two children, Anne Hamilton Deger of McLean and Jay Hamilton of Arlington County; daughter-in-law Bonnie Hamilton and son-in-law Gary Deger; sisters Barbara Fraley and V. Lee Hamilton; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held this Friday July 18 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22101. Good Friend, great humor, best golf partner in any foursome.. Will miss him. John and I could never trace our familes to see if we came from the same clan, but decided that all Hamilons had to be cousins. Lots of love to Jay, Anne and their families.
