John Benjamin Hampshire

Passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023, at his home in Sarasota, with his wife Eileen and son, John, by his side.

John was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, on August 25, 1927. He was brought to the United States as an infant and spent his early years in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. With war looming in Europe, his father was transferred to Rockford, Illinois, where John graduated from high school.

In 1944 John joined the U.S. Navy and served on two aircraft carriers, the Valley Forge and the Tarawa. Upon discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at, and graduated from, M.I.T. with a degree in Architecture.

In 1953 he married Martha Long of Richibucto, New Brunswick. They took up residence in the Boston area, where they had two children, Barbara Louise, (Mark Roche) and John B. Hampshire ll (Anne Murray). Martha passed away in 1979, and in 1986 John married Joyce Gregorian of Holliston, Massachusetts, who died in 1991. In 1994 John married Eileen Bedoukian of Hudson, Quebec, who had two adult children Gregory and Christopher. John was predeceased by his brother, Alan, and his beloved Aunt Anna.

John is survived by his wife, Eileen, daughter Barbara, son John B. Hampshire ll, sister Anne Palmer, her children Kary Hemmingway, Clay Gipson, Donald Gipson, and their families, his sister-in- law Margie Hampshire and her children Lee Anne, Carole, Curtis, and their families.

John and Eileen gained a bonus daughter when they met Felicity and Bob Stack in Sarasota in 2011 and in time gained three bonus grandchildren, twins Walter and Amadeus, then Anastasia, who with her brothers face-timed John from England hours before he died, which brought him much joy.

During his career mainly in institutional architecture, John was associated with several prestigious Boston firms, Shepley Bullfinch Richardson and Abbott, Charles A. Maguire, PARD Team, and Herzog Hart, before starting his own private practice.

In 1994 John and Eileen moved to Sarasota, Florida, where John renewed his love of sailing. John is a past Commander of the Sarasota Power Squadron.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 12 at 11.30 a.m.
