Hayward, John T. age 79, a recent resident of Rochester, and longtime resident of New Brighton, died unexpectedly at home January 2, 2007. Born May 10, 1927 in South Bend, IN. Graduate of Washburn HS & U of MN. Worked as an entomologist & plant pathologist for the US Dept. of Agriculture. Married Mary Jo Peterson on May 3, 1952. Upon retirement, volunteered at the MN Zoo for 15 years. Member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Rochester. Survived by wife, Mary Jo; sons, Tom of Bloomington & Mark (Kathy) of Rochester; daughter, Nancy (Bob) Windels of Eden Prairie; sister, Barbara (Andy) Slater of New Richmond, WI.; grandchildren, Laura, Megan & Katie Windels, and Ariel & Sam Hayward; brother-in-law John Huff of Bloomington; and sister-in-law Marjorie Keefe, of Mpls. Preceded in death by his parents, James & Maude; brother, Harold Keefe; and sister, Mary Huff. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Zoo or Mayo Foundation. Memorial Service: Mon., Jan. 8, 11 AM at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Dr., Edina. Private internment at Sunset Cemetery, Mpls. John was such a good friend to my Dad over the years they volunteered together at the MN Zoo. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting John, from the stories I've heard about him I know that there is a bright new star in Heaven. My thought are with the family.

I am so sorry to hear about John. I will always remember his contagious optimism and cheerful nature. I will miss him but will always have those wonderful memories. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
