John Hein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2022.
John William Hein, age 67, sadly passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug 23, 2022, at Lake Tahoe, California. A resident of Nevada with homes in Incline Village and Reno, John was born February 22, 1955 in San Francisco, California.

John is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Karen (Leonoudakis); three sons, Nicholas (Tammy), John (Roslyn), Jared (Rachel); grandson Emerson; sisters Barbara Hein and Shirley Hein. He was a loving husband, supportive father, wonderful, loving Grampy, brother and uncle.

John grew up on 25th Street in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco and in Daly City on Hanover Street, near the "Top of the Hill". He was a graduate of Serramonte High School, where he was a member of the soccer team and very active in woodshop. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his MBA from the Haas School of Business. While working his way through college, John was a truck driver for Richmond Wholesale Meat Company located in the East Bay. It was a good job experience where he made life long friends and many good memories, which he often liked to share. John was a shining star while working his way up to become a Senior Vice President with Union Bank. His professional career in finance and international banking allowed him numerous opportunities to travel the world, including living abroad in Japan. At the age of fifty-five, due to smart investing and financial planning, John was able to retire early from his banking profession and enjoy the "fruits of his labor."

John's family and friends were his life. He always said that his greatest accomplishments in life were his three sons, Nicholas, John and Jared! He was so proud to be their father, always supporting them and offering guidance, as each one endeavored to achieve their own goals in life. John loved living in Lake Tahoe, was a voracious reader, fierce debater and had a great knack for financial investing. John was born a SF Giants, 49ers and Warriors fan and he was a forever loyal supporter of his often struggling Cal Bears. He enjoyed playing golf and dining out, was the family travel planner for all of our most memorable family vacations, loved music, (especially his Motown) and was always good for "one more hand on the blackjack table!"John could also play a mean game of handball, ping pong and tennis. And, we can't forget his bowling prowess! A life stopped too short, John will always be remembered for his loving support of his family, his strong work ethic and values, his strong independence, his kindness, his sage advice, his calm and dignified presence, his silly chuckle and warm, friendly, beautiful smile. With grateful hearts, we stand upon John's shoulders, as we reflect on his life and all the many ways in which his life has been a blessing to us. God has chosen to call John Home and bless him with the joy of Eternal Life. We pray that we will have the strength and grace to honor John's memory by following the inspiring, loving example of the life he lived.

A Private Requiem Mass was held for immediate family. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. For information regarding date, time and location, please email [email protected]

Shocked and saddened to learn of John's passing. Had lost touch over the years but very fond memories including visiting John, Karen and Nick during their time in Tokyo while he worked for the Bank of Tokyo and Karen's harrowing delivery of Nick. Peter Thompson
