Dr. John Jefferson Herron

John Herron Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 15 to Jul. 16, 2005.
HERRON,, DR. JOHN JEFFERSON 75, on July 12th of a complication of quadriplegia. He was a locally well-known optometrist who co-founded the Contact Lens Centers in Carrollton, Dallas, and Garland. John was born on Thanksgiving Day 1929. He was raised in Terrell, Texas. He earned his optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry and his engineering degree from UT Austin. He served as an Army Corporal in a MASH Unit during the height of the Korean War. He was active in the North Texas Optometric Society, Mensa and Intertel. John was a handsome, charming man with stunning pale blue eyes. He was adventurous, independent and unconventional. He traveled and lived all over the world. He had a true zest for life and a boundless curiosity. He was a voracious reader and an atrocious punster. He was also a devoted son, loving husband, and a proud and doting father. John came home from the Korean War with ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune disease which gradually fused his spine and hips but which slowed him remarkably little. In 1997 he was in a car accident which broke his brittle neck and paralyzed him from the shoulders down. John is preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Pauline, his first wife Gladys, his step-daughter Margaret and his beloved son Paul. He is survived by his second wife Cindy, his siblings, Davis Herron and Mary Young Hubka, his three nieces Mary Pauline Herron, Melissa Young, and Laurie Guillot, and his nephew David Young. The Herron family wishes to publicly acknowledge its most profound gratitude for the dear, good people of the much-maligned Dallas VA, especially those in the Spinal Cord Unit, the PICC team, the MICU/CCU, and the Chaplain services. Memorial services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, July 16, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church at the southwest corner of Lovers Ln and Central Expressway in Dallas.

I knew Dr. Herron professionaly. He was always kind and treated his patients with great dignity. I am sorry I missed the memorial service. My prayers are with his family.

John was my 1st cousin, and much older than I, so I didn't know him well. However, in the 60s I remember his coming to Sulphur Spgs. to fill in for my father, Dr. John Crawford, or my uncle, Dr. James L. Crawford, in their practice. He was always mistaken for my father's son since he looked so much like him and bore the name John. I remember his sense of humor at those times. I regret that I could not attend the memorial service, but my prayers are with his wife, Cindy, his sister, Mary Adair, and his brother, Davis.

John was my cousin. He was such a smart person and very good to his family. We had such fun together when we were children. I always looked up to him. So sorry I could not come to his funeral today. My prayers will be with his dear wife Cindy, his sister, Mary Adair and his brother Davis. Norma

John was my cousin, and while I was not close to him, I remember how much my father, Dr. John F. Crawford, cared for his namesake. He had great admiration for John, and was extremely proud of his many accomplishments. I regret that I cannot attend the memorial service today.
