John W. “Skip” Higley passed away on August 21, 2022, in Florida. John was born on December 11, 1928, to Jack and Ethel Higley in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He was married to Mary Catherine “Kitty” (Cullen) on September 15, 1952 and was also an army veteran of the Korean War and member of the VFW. John owned and operated Higley Construction in Emmetsburg, IA for many years. Some of the notable local buildings he built are the Lakeside Lutheran Home, the Emmetsburg Fire Station and the Classroom building at ILCC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty Higley, his daughter Maggie Johnson, his parents, Jack and Ethel Higley and his three sisters, Emroy, Patricia and Nancy. He is survived by his five children, Heather Higley (FL), Bridget Bohnsack (MI), Jack Higley (CA), Dan Higley (CA), and Jim Higley (IA) along with his ten grandchildren and his eight great grandchildren.

Dear Higley Family, I am sending my deepest sympathy to all of you on the death of your father/grandfather. Your parents were my godparents, and they were always so good to me. Whenever I would see them, they'd always make a fuss over me, and when I was little, they'd always send a Christmas gift. My mom and dad often reminisced about the good times in Emmetsburg, and their stories always included your parents. Now at last your dad is in heaven with your mother and Maggie, where they welcomed him. I have also posted a photo of them on my baptism.

After growing up in Emmetsburg, I have spent the past 50 years in Jackson, MN. I attend Good Shepherd Catholic Church, which Skip and his company built in 1967. It's as beautiful today as it was when it opened. Godspeed, Skip.

Skip was my godfather and every Christmas Eve, he would stop over with a little gift for me. I will never forget how special he made me feel. Never underestimate the power of small acts of kindness towards children. I have carried that lesson with me my entire life. Thanks, Skipper! Say hi to the gang up there!
