John Hill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2025.
John Arthur Hill passed away on February 10, 2025, at his home in New Castle, New Hampshire. Born on August 31, 1943, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, John lived a life dedicated to education, exploration, faith and his family.

John earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, graduating in 1965. He also earned a Master of Education from The George Washington University in Washington D. C. The following year, he began a career as an educator with the Fairfax County Public Schools system in Virginia. Teaching social studies for many years, John later transitioned into administration as an assistant principal at a middle school. His commitment to education and community service spanned over two decades until his retirement in 1988.

Following retirement from education, John's love of travel led to a second career as a corporate travel agent in Washington, D.C. This role allowed him to explore the world while helping others do the same. In 2002, John retired fully and moved to his family home overlooking the Piscataqua River in New Castle, New Hampshire. He enjoyed his retirement by returning to New Castle Island and building great friendships on the seacoast and beyond. One of his favorite past times was sitting on the front porch overlooking the river and visiting with family and friends. Travel was one of John's greatest passions. He particularly loved visiting Ireland and England, often reflecting on his family's historical ties to both countries.

Faith played an essential role in John's life. A devout Catholic, he attended mass daily and was an active member of both St. Ignatius Parish in Somersworth, New Hampshire and Corpus Christi Parish in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During his retirement, he lived out his faith in many ways, and was a friend to many, through his weekly visits and sharing meals.

John's role as an uncle was very dear to him and an important part of his life. He stepped into the role of a father figure to his niece and nephews when they were young children and continued that commitment throughout his entire life. He attended many baptisms, graduations, weddings, and family events all over the country through the years. Uncle John was dearly loved by his niece, nephews and their children who knew him as their uncle as well. His absence will be felt in our hearts forever.

John is survived by his cousin Natalie Keller of Beverly, Massachusetts; cousin Jeremy Keller of Istanbul, Turkey; sister-in-law Linda Yates of Crossville, Tennessee; niece Cynthia (Dave) Morrison of Chesapeake, Virginia; nephew Tim (Melinda) Grant of Carlsbad, California; and nephew Syd (Rhonda) Grant of Fort Worth, Texas; and many more grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Dehon Hill, and Sally Fultz Hill.

A funeral mass will be held on May 3, 2025, at Holy Trinity Church, located at 404 High Street in Somersworth, New Hampshire at 2:00 PM. A private graveside service will be held for the family only, at the Riverside Cemetery in New Castle.

The family will receive friends with a visitation at the Farrell Funeral Home located at 684 State Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Friday, May 2nd from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

I was just thinking about John and wondered what he was doing and what he was up and if I could reconnect to him when I came up upon this obituary. He was a lovely person and a bright spot in my life. He was my travel agent over a number of years in Washington DC. I am sorry he is gone. Anna Phillips

John and I were friends for so many years. I already miss him terribly. I am thankful for all the memories and conversations. I think our shared background enabled us to be a great support for each other through the years. I will keep his cherished family and friends in my prayers.

Bidding adieu is necessary but not an easy task. I thank God for having had John in my life for the years and the differences he made in my life and miss him so much. May he be enjoying all that heaven has to offer.

John was a treasure of a friend!
I met John while traveling, for business, on the seacoast of New Hampshire about 20+ years ago. We had a common friend, Lois Wilson, and we stayed connected even when I moved to FL in 2009. John visited me in FL and when I would be in NH, I always made sure that John was part of my schedule. The love and support that John had for my daughter was heartfelt and appreciated. We had many phone chats from Football to Politics and I always had a spring in my step after talking with John. The calls will be missed.
"Bye for now John" until we meet again.
Sending blessings and prayers to the family and other friends, who knew Lois too. All of you contributed to this beautiful person who was loved so much.

What I loved most about John was his genuine concern for me and my family. He always asked how my kids were going. He and I always had great conversations and we shared a love for this spot under the Sarah Long Bridge in Kittery overlooking Portsmouth harbor. John I miss you my friend.

I am so very sorry to be writing this. John was a wonderful neighbor and a good friend. We shared many happy times together and he always shared his newspaper with me. He tolerated my jibs even when I would chew him out for not paying attention to his health. Rest in peace, my friend, you´ll be missed by all who loved you

It´s hard to put into words how much you meant to me Uncle John. You stepped into a father role when I was an baby and never left our side. You were quiet at times but always had words of encouragement and wisdom. The phone calls kept us close even with a 1,500 mile distance. My memories of visits in D.C. then New Hampshire will be cherished for the rest of my lifetime.
What meant the most about you was that you loved all of our children the same and always sent your love to them in every phone call. I will take a page from your book and honor you closing how you closed every single phone conversation; "by for now".

I have a very fond memory of working at Bartlett's (diner & ice cream) in New Castle when I was a teenager and John was only a few years older. He'd been put in charge and he was very patient and kind, giving me rides rides home to Portsmouth in his dark blue Covair. It seems like a thousand years ago now, but John showed such fine upbringing and generosity to me it's worth a mention. I never forgot his fine demeanor. Many years later my brother Jim Cerny became a resident of New Castle and knew John. I'm sorry to hear John has "moved on".
