John Howe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2025.
Mr. John James Howe, 79, passed away on September 15, 2025, in Oregon City, Oregon. Born on December 1, 1945, in Plymouth, England, John lived a life marked by dedication to family, service to his country, and a deep appreciation for friendship and community.

John's early years took him from England to Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from Ribault High School in the class of 1964. His pursuit of education continued across several institutions: Aurora University in Illinois, Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, and Portland State University in Portland. These academic experiences laid the foundation for a successful career that would span decades.

Professionally, John was a respected mortgage broker whose warmth and professionalism left a lasting impression on the real estate community. Known for his thoughtful gestures-often arriving with candy or treats during office visits-he built strong relationships with colleagues and clients alike. His reputation for excellence and kindness made him a beloved figure in his field.

In 1968, John was drafted into the U.S. Army but chose to enlist voluntarily for a three-year term. He served honorably until 1971, with notable assignments in Vietnam as well as postings in Georgia; Darmstadt, Germany; and Fort Hood, Texas. His military service remained an important part of his identity throughout his life. He maintained close ties with fellow veterans through a fellowship group that brought camaraderie and support over many years.

John married Audrey (Axmaker) Howe, the love of his life and partner of 57 years. Together they built a family that became his greatest source of pride and joy. He is survived by Audrey; their children Brady Howe (Peter Fallaw), Aaryn Peterson (Eric), and Jordan Howe (Alyssa); and grandchildren Grace (Kolby), Liberty, Jo, Sophia, Finn, and Camila. He also leaves behind his sister Ahni Atkins and many cherished family members in Florida and England.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Whilmia Howe.

A man of many passions, John found joy in fishing trips, cheering on Florida Gator Football and Oregon State Baseball teams, coaching youth sports, golfing with friends, and attending any event involving his grandchildren-his favorite role being "Grandpa." For forty-five years he gathered regularly with his slow pitch softball friends for poker nights-a tradition that brought laughter and connection across decades.

John valued relationships above all else-whether among family members spread across continents or lifelong friends made through work or service. His legacy is one of loyalty, humor, generosity of spirit, and unwavering love for those around him.

A memorial service will be held at Canby Christian Church, October 11th, at 2 p.m., to honor John's life.

May the memory of Mr. John James Howe bring comfort to all who knew him. An Interment will be held on October 10, 2025, at 01:00 PM at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd. This will be a short military service. A Memorial Service will be held on October 11, 2025, at 02:00 PM at Canby Christian Church 444 N Holly, Canby, Oregon.
