John Huffman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 24 to Mar. 25, 2023.
John Phillip Huffman, "Phil", 72, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Friday, March 24th, 2023 after a courageous battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome/Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Phil spent his final days surrounded by his devoted family. Phil was born on October 13, 1950 in Pikeville, Kentucky, the son of the late John and Patirica Huffman and was the oldest of 5 children.

Phil graduated from Pikeville High School class of 1969. He enjoyed athletics, playing baseball and football. While attending high school, he met the love of his life, Joanne Bergman. Upon graduation, he attended Morehead State University. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for 22 years. Upon retiring, he continued as a civilian contractor in logistics at Lockheed Martin, Warner Robins, Georgia for many years and later settled in Myrtle Beach.

Phil and Joanne were married August 21, 1971 in Pikeville, Kentucky. They raised two beautiful daughters.

Phil was a dedicated and loving husband, father, brother, grandaddy, uncle, PoPo, Mr. Phil, and friend. He was strongly committed to his faith, church and community, living each day being kind, helpful and walking in the Spirit. Family was his passion. He faithfully attended his grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Phil loved the mountains, camping, the sunrise at the beach, and the Kentucky Wildcats. At the age of 61, he completed a Tough Mudder obstacle course, achieving a personal goal of mental and physical endurance which ultimately prepared him for the fight of his life. We always called him our "one tough mudder."

Phil was welcomed into heaven by his parents, John Paul Huffman and Patricia Ann Huffman, and his younger brother Terry Lee Huffman (Beverly Huffman).

In addition to his wife, Joanne, he is survived by his two daughters, Christy Huffman Miller (Matt) and Rebekah Huffman, his brothers Patrick Huffman (Myra), Michael Huffman (Connie), sister Julia Ann Huffman Shiffer (Chris), sister in law Rebecca Riesen, sister in law Nancy Bergman, four grandchildren, Christa Greene Grinnell (Brandon), Callie Carson Greene (Jarod), Jackson Scott, Devin Phillip, four great grandchildren Lucas, Carson, Parker, Kadan John, six nieces and nephews, ten great nieces and nephews and many more extended family.

A memorial gathering will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 11:30 AM at Midtown Vineyard Church, 504 27th Ave N, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Calvary Christian School Building Fund, 4511 Dick Pond Road, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.

Family would like to give a special thank you to Coastal Cancer Center of Myrtle Beach for all their care and support, especially to Dr. Vijay Paudell, and the Grand Strand Hospital infusion center nurses.

It was truly a blessing when we met Joanne and Phil.
Our friendship grew throughout the years.
Phil was one of the kindest, caring, wonderful friend.
He always had kind words, and a genuine interest in others.
He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to all his family.

Uncle Phil was a special man who I am blessed to have had in my life. I can recall so many amazing memories of all of our vacations spent together, camping, the beach, the RV trips, and just spending time with family. Some of my favorite memories were the UK games where you and daddy (and other family) would come up and watch me dance and we would cheer on the Wildcats!!!! Any time spent with you was special and I will cherish all the memories we created throughout the years. Brielle and Adalyn sure loved their great uncle Phil, you were one of a kind. Kevin loved you like an uncle too. Gone too soon, but never forgotten. Forever in our hearts.
I love you, Kimberly
