John Hyatt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 11 to Apr. 12, 2018.
John Samuel Hyatt, age 69 of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully and full of hope on Saturday, April 7, 2018. He left his beautiful and beloved wife, Mary, of forty-three years to continue celebrating his wonderful, vividly colorful and theatrical life where the beautiful scenic lights (LED, of course) in heaven are brighter. Missing him now and always will be his children, Kai Li Fouts (Hyatt) Jette and Trey Fouts-Hyatt, their spouses, Chris Jette, and Angie Fouts-Hyatt, and all eight of his adored grand kiddos . . . Sydney, Macey, Cerys, Kale, Cade, Elley, Noah and Caleb. His loving parents, Baxter and Dorothy Hyatt, raised him in Madison, Wisconsin, where he graduated from Central High School. He continued on to Luther College, in Decorah, Iowa, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. He then enlisted in the United States Army, and served as a Defense Information Journalist in the 82nd Airborne. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he entered graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Bucky!) and attained his Master of Fine Arts, a terminal degree, in Theatrical Design and Technology. A professorship at Grand Valley State University brought John and his young family to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he taught theater design, tech and lighting. In 1984, John and Mary established John S. Hyatt and Associates, Inc. in order to help theatre organizations achieve their design dreams and visions. John was an artist in every way. His love of photography and music, his scenic design, and his ability to create lighting experiences so all could truly see their beauty was matched only by his passion for family, his pride in their talents and accomplishments, and his love of listening, engaging and sharing stories with the people around him. The family welcomes all to a visitation on Friday, April 13th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Chapel, 3525 Remembrance Road NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. A Celebration of John will be held on Saturday, April 14th, at 3:30 p.m. at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, 30 N. Division Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions be made to Festival of the Arts or any other charitable organization in John's name. festivalgr.org/the_hub/donate

I have just learned of this when I was looking up his email address. I am so saddened by it. I have been a relative newcomer to GR and it artistic scene. John and Mary have been cornerstones of that community, I especially liked his quiet manner and gentle smile. (I never saw him without either.)

I will always remember John as one of my very best friends. Whenever in Madison, he nearly always called and we'd do lunch where we discuss family and some shop talk. John's bright smile and frequent "uh-huh!" always made those meetings a real treat. Kathy and I send our condolences and love to Mary (so sweet and talented), Kai Li, and Trey. We all will miss John; but we will never forget him. Uh-huh!

I met John at Luther. He will always be in his early twenties to me. The last time we spoke was about 25 years ago, as he was requesting that I contact his daughter in one of the beach communities south of LA. And now I understand he has eight grandchildren. That is a blessed life. Wish I stayed in communication with him. Where does the time go?
Big hugs in this time of grief.

John was a wonderful theater colleague. Always patient and kind, he helped me learn stagecraft. I greatly appreciated his generosity, and especially his under-the-radar humor. Mary and the kids would sometimes show up during load-ins, and their presence was fun and calming. Thank you, John, for your guidance and friendship.

The lights everywhere dimmed for John...and then grew brighter in the heavens. Blessings, dear Mary, and the family as well.

John Hyatt was a very dear colleague. I worked with him on a number of committees and in particular co-founded a non-profit, Korean Connection, for which he acted as treasurer. He was unfailingly visionary, hard-working, kind, wise, and generous in his support for the people of this community. I will greatly miss his cheerful, intelligent face and leadership that truly made a positive difference in the world.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of such a wonderful person :'( My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you and I am sorry I can't be there to see him off properly, but "the show must go on..."

I seem to recall playing King Aggamemnon,or some such thing. Just sorry I couldn't memorize my lines!! Probably got John's directing career off to a shaky start.

It was always good to see him when he passed through Madison. He must have gotten busy lately with all the grandchildren.

My condolences to Mary and family. John will be missed.

Rhett joins me in sending heartfelt condolences to Mary and family. I have fond memories of our work together in the old Spectrum Theare..where he made wonderful designs in an impossible space. Sending my sympathies and affection..Jeralyn

The joy of his smile, the never-ending kindness, the amazing humor and talents about which is was so humble shall continue forever. Blessings to Mary, the kids and grandkids -- each of whom John was devoted to. We are so saddened by this loss, and yet will appreciate the legacy left behind.
