Dear Imholte family,
I am a 1975 graduate of UMM. One of my most precious photos is Jack shaking my hand and handing me my diploma.
I happen to be a great-great grandson of a member of Company B, 1st Minnesota Volunteers, and am pleased to own a copy of Jack's history of that remarkable Regiment. I will remember Jack every time I pick it up.
My condolences are extended to all of you that loved Chancellor Imholte.

Lucy and all - So sudden we hear the news. Time passes and waits for no one. Generations come and go on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus. Memories of the early years will need to be filed studiously away. Yes, there was a time with no Internet, texting and all the related stuff. Heck, I remember all the years when UMM didn't have any sort of real student center! And yet the place was deemed a gem. Today there's this endless shopping list of amenities that a campus simply "must have," when really it's about keeping up with the Joneses or winning a peculiar "arms race." At some point our society will be humbled about this. I seem to recall Jack's silver hair inspiring a nickname, maybe "silver fox?" I asked him once if Longstreet was right at Gettysburg, wanting to establish a defensive stance (vs. Lee's pugnaciousness)? He agreed. Civil War history can be mined endlessly. I wrote a lengthy blog post about the Sam Smith "running rifleman" statue at Summit Cemetery here. Our library has Jack's book: "The First Minnesota." There is a little display board here reporting on Jack's death. You're aware my father Ralph E. Williams passed away in February of last year. A real changing of the guard, I guess. Steve Granger, Don Spring et. al. Take care you all.

Lucy and Family,
Susan and I were deeply saddened to learn of Jack's passing this week. I had the great privilege of working with Jack and the UMM community in strengthening the Campus in its evolution into one our Nation's truly outstanding public liberal arts colleges. Jack was a passionate and visionary academic leader who left a lasting legacy and impact that will benefit future generations of students and the academic community of the University of Minnesota Morris.

Lucy and family, Barb and I deeply respected Jack. He made a few bad bets with me on sports but I loved the bounty. Gatherings at the Grangers is also a lasting memory.

I was a student at the University of MN/Morris (‘88-‘92) and when Jack went back into the classroom I had the wonderful pleasure of being a TA for Jack on a couple of occasions in his Introduction to World History courses. He was a strong and committed presence on campus and being able to work with him was an unforgettable opportunity. I believe his mentorship to me, love of working with students and passion for history are visible in my classroom today and I speak of him often with my own students.

I send my condolences to the entire Imholte Family and hope they know that Jack's legacy of teaching is still very present in my classroom and he will always hold a very dear place in my heart!

Jack Imholte was a scholar, friend and patriot. I had several classes with him and the discussions both in and out of the classroom were captivating and enlightening. Having served in Korea for a year and deployments brought a whole new perspective to class and he appreciated the military jargon only a Soldier will understand. He was a friend of the University of Minnesota, Morris; respected by his peers and students alike. His memory will live on in the many books he donated to the library and the endowment he has provided for current and future students of UMM. Rest in Peace Jack.
