John Johnsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2025.
John "JJ" Johnsen III, 57, passed away on February 16, 2025, in Providence, Rhode Island. Born on February 11, 1968, in Neptune, New Jersey, he lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and an unmistakable presence that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

John pursued his love for hospitality and the culinary arts at Johnson & Wales University, earning an associate degree in Culinary Arts and a bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management. His career was dedicated to the food service industry, where he worked tirelessly to bring excellence to every role he undertook. Most recently, he served as the Director of Food Service for Sodexo Corporation, where his leadership and expertise were highly valued.

Beyond his professional achievements, John had a deep love for the outdoors and hands-on problem-solving. A true fishing enthusiast, he found joy in everything from battling big game fish to patiently pulling perch through the ice. His green thumb was legendary-he could make any plant thrive with ease. He also had an uncanny ability to "MacGyver" solutions to any problem, always finding creative ways to fix what others deemed impossible.

John's proudest life achievement was his daughter Ella. He loved her "to the moon and back".

John's personality was as dynamic as it was unforgettable. He had a kind heart and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. His loyalty knew no bounds-his friends were many and cherished. He had a way of filling up a room with his energy and humor but was equally famous for knowing how to clear one when the moment called for it.

He is survived by his beloved daughter Ella Johnsen; his ex-wife Bethany Johnsen; his sister Susan (Johnsen) Grietz and her husband Paul Grietz; and his nephew Andrew Grietz. He was predeceased by his parents, John Johnsen Jr. and Muriel (Saunders) Johnsen.

JJ's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him-his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by his generosity and spirit. May his legacy bring comfort to those who mourn his passing. A memorial service and gathering of friends and family will be planned in the Spring.

Worked with John at the Good Sam in Brockton for about 10 years.
Got to work with him again when he came back last year to fill in. It was great working with him again. Sorry to hear he passed on. I am sure he is up baiting his hook to catch his next big fish.

John was the kindest man I have met in a very long time. I loved his outlook on life and our conversations. He would always say it was okay if my dog Jingles peed on his lawn. Fly high with the angels. You will be missed. Gail.

Johnny, I am so glad we had that beer last year, it was great catching up. I will miss the silly reels you'd send me and our random chats. Miss Ella, I used to wait on you and your dad at Doyle's.. he just loved you so much and was so proud of you. Every person he talked to knew you were the best thing that ever happened to him.. we still have Shirley temples and the best popcorn if you're ever in the neighborhood

So hard to believe. JJ will be deeply missed. We shared some fun times together. The life stories were even better. All conversations at some point included him boasting about his daughter. Man did he cherish her. Talked to you last mid December and then missed a call from you right after Christmas... Ironically I still have your voicemail saved. Saved only because the message was so JJ... For all that knew him, you know what I mean. It's going to be very hard to hit delete now. May you rest in peace my friend. Until we meet again!!!

I remember him taking me fishing one night, just before I left for the Army. Man I don´t remember what we were fishing for I just remember we were on a large charter boat with about 30 people. And we tied little glow sticks on the line. We were pulling the fishing in left and right. I managed to a baby lemon shark it was 3 feet or so.
