John “Jack” Hartwell Kent, 91, of Lewiston, NY, entered into rest on Saturday, December 1, 2007 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Lewiston, NY. Born on March 23, 1916 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Cyril Clyde and Ellen Louise (Hefron). On June 4, 1935 he married the former Elizabeth Lorraine Connor. She predeceased him on August 18, 2005. Mr. Kent was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY, attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School. Jack served in the United States Navy, during World War II, from July 27, 1945 until his honorable discharge on April 25, 1946. For over forty years, he worked for Carborundum until his retirement in the early 1980’s. Mr. Kent was the owner and operator of Kent Family Mart, for five years. Mr. Kent was a member of the Carborundum Travel Club and Carborundum Alumni Association where he served as past president. He was also a member of St. Peter’s Church and their Holy Name Society, the Niagara County Office for the Aging, Lewiston Senior Citizens, John Duke Center and Meals-on-Wheels. Jack was the founder of the Echota Club. He was past commissioner for the American Legion Baseball League, which he coached with his brother, Donald. Mr. Kent was active in organizing trips, for seniors, to games and other events. Jack was involved with the Festival of lights. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and staying active. Mr. Kent is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth “Betsy” Lorraine (Leo) Jarosz of Youngstown, NY and Patricia “Patsy” (Roy) Nunnery of Hamlin, NY; one son, William John (Teresa) Kent of Chili, NY; eight grandchildren, Mark and Robert Jarosz, Deborah (Craig) Holmes, Michael (Amber) Nunnery, Kent (Shelly) Nunnery, Richard (Valerie) Nunnery, Michelle (Doug) McDonough and Jeffery (Elizabeth) Kent; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Dorothy (late Glen) Mort and Suzanne (Richard) Bienick, both of Niagara Falls, NY; two brothers-in-law, Ronald and Miles (late Ann) Connor, both of Niagara Falls, NY; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Donald R. (late Gertrude) Kent. Friends may call on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY 297-9007, where funeral services will begin on Friday, December 7th at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Peter’s Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY with Rev. Sebastian Pierro officiating. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
