John Kindred Obituary

John C. Kindred passed away on a Friday afternoon on January 20, 2023 at the age of 88. He is survived by his son, John A. Kindred, his grandson Sean Kindred and wife Amber, and three grandsons, Aidan, Ian and Logan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Janice. John Kindred was born Oct 1st, 1934, in Oklahoma City to Cortez and Richie May Kindred. He and Janice both graduated from high school in Clinton, Oklahoma and were married on Nov 1st 1957. John spent two years in the Army serving overseas and four years in the reserves. He graduated from OU with degrees in Drama and Art History. After receiving his teachers certificate from Southwestern Oklahoma State University he taught high school and junior high in Amarillo Texas throughout the early 1960s, later moving to Las Vegas, New Mexico to receive his Masters Degree in Art from Highlands University. In the 1970s he joined the faculty of the Institute of American Indian Art, in Santa Fe, teaching Advanced Painting and Drawing. Here, at the old historic Santa Fe Indian School campus, he taught many of the notable Native American artists we know today. John loved animals, trees, wilderness, art, learning and above all, his wife and lifelong friend and companion, Janice Kindred. John will interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on February 9th at 2pm.
