John Liljestrand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 1, 2020.
John Edward Liljestrand, Jr.

Dr. John Edward Liljestrand Jr., was born on July 6th, 1966 in Wichita, Kansas. He passed away on February 16, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Fairfax, VA. He died at the age of 53 after a year-long battle with a rare form of lung cancer.

John grew up in Oklahoma City. During his youth, he became a skilled pianist, artist, science/math student, and band member. To make extra money, John mowed yards and painted houses during high school. After graduating as valedictorian, he received a presidential scholarship and attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. John earned a BA in chemistry with minors in math, biology, and physics. Newly married to his wife Vera, John attended the College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City and completed his residency in Family Practice at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1995, John joined Kaseman Family Practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2006, John was chosen by his fellow physicians as "Top Doc" in his field by Albuquerque, The Magazine. Being a family practice doctor was not just a job, it was an inspired calling. He absolutely loved getting to know his patients and considered many to be his friends. In addition to family practice, John was a certified Palliative and Hospice doctor, assisting so many through the most difficult of times. In 2018, John relocated to Fairfax, Virginia and joined Inova Medical Group, where he continued to see patients until very recently.

John was a man of immense energy, varied interests, and a vibrant sense of humor. With some help, he built the family's adobe home in Tijeras, New Mexico. He was a Cub Scout leader for many years and enjoyed hiking with his family. John was on the Board of Directors for Ballet Repertory Theatre of New Mexico from 2004-2018, acting as president for many of those years and as house manager for ballet performances at the KiMo Theatre. John maintained a ceaseless search for knowledge and enjoyed debate with anyone who was willing. He was especially fascinated with the workings of the human mind, reading countless books on the subject over his lifetime. John strove to live boldly, care for others with compassion, and always look for fun.

Dr. Liljestrand is survived by his parents, John and Suzie Liljestrand, his former wife, Vera Liljestrand, his four dearly loved children, Katherine (husband Ricardo), Isaiah, Isabel, and Nicholas, his closest friend, Daniella Salazar, and her children whom he also loved deeply, Anthony, Marissa, and Jayden.

His family will be holding a memorial service in Albuquerque, NM in the upcoming months, date TBA.

Memorial donations may be made to the "Children of John Liljestrand Jr. Education Memorial Fund" at Wells Fargo, Ballet Repertory Theatre of New Mexico (BRTNM), the Grand Canyon Conservancy, Ocean Conservancy, or to the scholarship established by his parents at Benedictine College, the "Dr. John E. Dr. Liljestrand was my and my 4 kids doctor when we lived in alb. Now I´m a grandma and wanted him to be my granddaughter´s. I kept looking for him & this popped up. I am really saddened he became sick and now he is with our Lord. My son was killed almost 4 months ago and I hope he is able to see him in Heaven. Dr. L was THE best Dr. we have ever had! May he RIP, RIH.

I have had many doctors all over the world. John was, without a doubt, my favorite and most talented. John cared in a way that cannot be put into words, it was a feeling and passion. This world needs many more John Liljestrands in it; so our loss of him is indeed a sad passing. Having said that I can see him half smile and reassure us all it is ok, and simply part of life as we know it. Regardless, you will be sincerely missed fine sir, gentlemen, doctor and friend.

I met Dr. Lil back around ’95 when I was looking for a Dr. after I started my first “real” job. The Dr. he worked with was no longer taking on new patients, so I had to meet with Dr. Lil. How fortunate for me! Through twenty-three years, he stayed my Dr...as I got married, he became my wife’s Dr., and later, Dr. to my three kids. I told him how my wife was from northern NM to which he exclaimed so was his...He also became my mother in law’s Dr. His disposition was always pleasant and his ability to empathize was excellent. When I had questions about my kids, he placed himself in my shoes and discussed what he had done with his kids. I remember that he didn’t care for the big impressive building that Pres had built to accommodate more Dr’s and patients because he preferred the smaller building that allowed him to be closer to his patients. He felt the practice had lost some of its intimateness in that big building. I don’t think any of his patients from then would disagree. I was sad and disappointed to hear that Dr. Lil was leaving to Virginia. However, I was shocked and a little overcome with emotion to hear of his passing today. I wish his family and friends love and kindness and I offer my prayers.
Sincerely,
Ricardo H. Ruiz

He was the best doctor I’ve ever had. He was so caring and really listened. I was so sad when he left Albuquerque. He was also my husband, daughter and grandsons doctor as well as myself. Learning of his passing was devastating news. I remember talking of Rowland’s Nursery going out of business and how after hours he took his young family to take their Christmas photos in front of Rowland’s Christmas window display. He was just so easy to talk to. Our condolences to his family.

Dr John, as he was known to my family, was an amazing doctor. My husband an I became his patients when he was new to Albuquerque. My husband was seen more than me. We moved to WA for two years. When we moved back, my file was in deep storage. From memory, he said “if I remember right, you were pretty healthy but there was something we were working on with your husband.” My husband was not at the appointment. I was amazed by his memory and his care.
He later became our sons doctor and would share information about his experience as a dad.
I was so sad when he moved. My sister, also an old patient who had moved to PA said it’s only a 6 hour drive. It’d almost be worth the drive to be his patient again. I am truly saddened by his loss.

He was such a great doctor. He had been my Autistic son's doctor for 15+ years. Dr. Liljestrand was so willing to learn about Autism Spectrum and showed such compassion for my son, Joshua, and troubles he faced with Allopecia Areata and severe allergies. He is truly, truly missed by Joshua and me, and others in the special needs community!! Heaven gained a wonderful doctor and friend!!!

I worked with John when he first came out of residency with Byron better across from Kaseman. He stood out then as a free spirit and an excellent committed doctor. My heart goes out to his family.

I was a long time patient of Dr. Liljestrand, from the about ten years old, until he moved from New Mexico. He helped me through so much in my life, including the death of my mother. Dr. Liljestrand was kind, caring, compassionate and one of the best doctors that I ever had the privilege of visiting. I was devastated when he left Albuquerque, after but was happy to hear being my doctor for so long, but happy to hear he was going to be closer to his daughter. When I saw the obituary today, my heart was broken. This man was an amazing person, a superior physician and a really good listener. My thoughts are with his family during this time.
