John LOVERING Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Dec. 12, 2014.
LOVERING, John "Kelly"
May 24, 1945 – December 10, 2014
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of John "Kelly" Lovering, of Regina, after a five year battle with cancer. Born in Winnipeg, Kelly was son to John and Ruth Lovering, and brother to Richard. He was predeceased by his parents, father and mother-in-law Romeo and Alyce Lafreniere and Richard's wife Marcia. He will be remembered for being a loving and devoted husband of 47 years to Mary Lyn, father to son Tyler Lovering (Sheridan) of Sydney, Australia and daughter Kristy Duperreault (Paul) of Wilcox. While others had grandchildren, Kelly and Mary Lyn have five of the grandest children. He spent many hours and days celebrating their successes and passions: in Canada: Ben, (the hockey player), Isaac, (the actor), Myah, (Grampy's princess); In Australia: Parker (the rugby player) and Quinn (the baseball player) - "Always pray for you; always play for you". He is also survived by Mary Lyn's siblings Gil (Gladys), Roma, Dennis (Raylene) and Mary Lee (Randy) and a wonderful extended family of supportive nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. In his lifetime, Kelly has been an amazing teacher, principal, coach and writer. In all of these areas he achieved excellence through an uncanny ability to understand individuals, figure out their greatest strength and instill confidence where often there was none. Through his hard work and guidance he was able to motivate, educate, mentor and inspire thousands of young minds across the globe. You may have known him as teacher, coach, friend, motivator or mentor, but whoever Kelly Lovering was in your life, it is certain that he made you want to work a little harder and laugh a lot louder with his unique wit and charm. The family would like to thank everyone for their unwavering support. They would also like to pass on their sincere love and gratitude to the staff of the Palliative care unit at Regina's Pasqua Hospital, the Home care nurses and the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic staff plus the numerous medical care staff who have served him over the years. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at St. Martin de Porres Parish, 4720 Castle Road, Regina, SK on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Peter Pham celebrant. Interment will take place at Regina Memorial Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to establish the Kelly Lovering Bursary, c/o Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, P.O. Box 100, Wilcox, SK S0G 5E0 or online at http:/ /www.notredame.ca/giving/ or email [email protected]. I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching with Kelly when we started our careers at Campbell Collegiate in the 1970's.We also player Sr. Basketball, hockey and socialized together...what fun we had!
Although I left teaching after Campbell there was no doubt that Kelly would continue on to be "one of the great ones". He had enough energy for 3 people!
Our sincere condolences to Mary Lyn and family at this time, He will be missed.

So sad to hear this news. I was a student in Kelly's first class at Campbell Collegiate in 1972. I can still see him walking into the room for the first time and giving us a smile and a wave. He was a great teacher -- lots of fun, and interesting. And, who knew that the 1972 Canada-Russia Summit series was a part of the official Grade 10 curriculum? Seems so, because we watched it in class! Tyler was just a baby then, and they lived near the school, so Kelly and Mary Lyn had no shortage of willing babysitters amongst the Grade 10 girls.
You had a great and satisfying career, Kelly, and your family experiences left nothing to be desired. My sympathy to those you left behind. The world will miss you, for sure.

December 13, 2014

Mary Lynn & family -- Our deepest sympathies. I feel very lucky to have had an opportunity to chat with Kelly one week before he passed. Kelly touched many lives. His sense of humour, infectious and welcoming personality and the "twinkle" in his eyes will be missed by all. His spirit will live on and will be remembered as a wonderful husband, proud father and grandfather.

Cherish his memory.

Perry and I just wanted to say how sorry we are that you lost such a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I know we've talked about Kelly being my Grade 8 Home Room and Social Studies Teacher when I attended Campbell in Regina... to me he was larger than life and for me he remained that way always and even now that he is gone I still think of him as such. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Kelly was a straight shooter, who used humor and intellect to motivate and create some very fine individuals including you Kristy - you are the daughter of two very wonderful people! I know you are very proud of your Dad and he loved you all more than anything... you will carry him with you in your hearts and he will never leave you.

Dear Mary Lyn, Tyler, Kristy & Families - Grant & I are so sad to hear that Kelly lost his battle with cancer. I am extremely grateful that I was able to see him in October for a quick chat & hugs. Kelly's first question was " How's the family? " 2nd question was "How's the hockey? " - always that thought on Kelly's mind.
I just know that there has to be hockey arenas & players in Heaven who have been waiting for an awesome coach & motivator and Kelly won't waste a moment. :-)
We are very sorry that we won't be able to be with you on Saturday but our thoughts will be with you, your family & friends, all the way from Mesa, as you say a final good-bye. Grant & I have so many good memories of the Lovering family from our 28 year friendship! We love you Kelly & we will miss you - until we meet again.

Dear Lovering family;
Our condolences go out to you. Kelly (Mr. Lovering) was a remarkable man. I had him as a teacher in Grade 8 and as a Canadian History teacher in Grade 12 at Campbell Collegiate. I also had him as a minor football coach in Grade 10 alongside Rider great Jack Abendschan.
His quick wit, his articulate speaking style, and his desire to connect with each student or player made all of us fortunate that he chose teaching and coaching as a career. He will be missed but he will continue to have an impact on all those he came across.
