John Markham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2024.
John Markham (1949-2024)

Husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. John Winston Markham, 74, of Louisville, KY, returned to his heavenly father on January 29, 2024.

He was born in Louisville in 1949 to Arthur Thomas and Martha Belle Markham. John was a proud Louisville Country Day and Choate Rosemary Hall graduate where he enjoyed playing soccer and squash. He was married to his college sweetheart Elise ("Lisette") Markham for 48 years and had two daughters who meant the world to him.

John graduated from Tulane University with degrees in Political Science in 1971 and a JD in 1973, and at the University of Florida in 1975 with an LLM in Tax. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. After passing the bar exam and completing his LLM, John returned to Louisville where his first position was a corporate attorney for Meidinger & Associates Compensation Corporation and he continued on to be a member of several Louisville law firms prior to starting his independent practice.

John and his wife were instrumental in founding Kentucky Harvest, a food reclamation distribution nonprofit, and they were on the board for 25 years. He was also a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and sang for many years in the choir.

Everyone who knew John knew how much he loved technology and computers. He was a president of the Kentucky and Indiana PC Users Group (KIPCUG), and helped to co-host the radio show "84 Online" on WHAS and the television show "DotCom" where he and Bob Sokoler would answer calls and questions about computer science.

John will always be remembered for his wit, sense of humor, and his love for sci-fi. He loved watching Star Trek and Star Wars with his family and attended many Star Wars opening night theater releases through the persuasion of his daughters. His love of Cajun food and culture followed him from his time in New Orleans at Tulane, and he enjoyed many Mardi Gras and crawfish boils as tradition with family. We will miss John every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

John was preceded in death by his father and mother Arthur and Martha Belle Markham, his brother Thomas Markham (Judy), and his sister Leslie Norman (Jay). He is survived by his sister Patricia Nightingale (David), wife Lisette Markham, and daughters Carter Markham Webb (Michael) and Courtney Markham (Ryan).

Visitation is Thursday, February 8, 1:00pm at St Luke's Episcopal Church, with the Funeral to follow at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Kentucky Harvest, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.
