I got to know John over the last four years visiting an Irish friend at Cromwell House. On an early visit to the rest home John started singing Irish songs so I put a play list together and he sang every song on playlist. I spent half an hour with John on 17/1/21 and I have gone to visit him today and discovered he died on 19/1. Rest In Peace John and I am sure you are now leading the singing up about with your favourite Irish song If you are Irish Come into the Parlour'. Condolences to all of John's family and friends.

Dear Helen
I have just found out that John died on 19 January, and wish to extend my sympathy to you and your family on the loss of a very amusing and likeable father, grandfather and teacher.
John was a real character in the Common Room of King's during his years there. He didn't miss a beat and was a fund of stories about all aspects of King's, and many other Auckland schools', comings and goings over the years.
He always called a spade a spade in his own distinctive manner, and I always found him very supportive of everything we were trying to achieve, especially in keeping everyone's feet on the ground!
I remember how proud he was of you from conversations we had over the years, and I know that the all the boys he taught will certainly remember him as a real character who always had their interests at heart.
I very much regret I will not be able to attend his funeral, but again
I just wanted to express my sympathy over the loss a caring, talented and very distinctive colleague.

John was a dear friend over many years, we played Bridge together and I lodged at his house for a few years. I will miss his sharp wit and funny intelligent anecdotes. He was a great listener and really cared about people close to him. Top teacher and great mate, rest in peace.
