John Marsh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 24, 2013.
Dr. John Emory "Jack" Marsh Jr. passed peacefully on Saturday December 21, 2013 at home with his loving family. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday morning, December 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St Andrews Episcopal Church, 217 West 26th street in Bryan, Texas with Father Daryl Hay officiating. Interment will be at the Bryan Cemetery following the service.

A third generation medical practitioner, Dr. Marsh was born on October 28, 1923 to John Emory Marsh, Sr. and Grace Harlan-Marsh in Temple, Texas. Dr. Marsh faithfully served the citizens of Brazos and the surrounding counties for more than 60 years, providing health care and assistance to all who passed his door.

"Jack" attended Bryan public schools, graduating from Stephen F. Austin in 1940. After High School, he enrolled in Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College, but like so many of his fellow "Ag's", left in 1942 to serve his country in World War II. After his service, he returned to Texas A&M and graduated with a Bachelors of Art in Science in 1946.

Dr. Marsh was accepted into the University of Texas Medical School in 1946 and completed his medical studies in 1950. He opened his family medicine practice shortly thereafter, where he served not only as a doctor, but also in numerous public service capacities, including Brazos County Health Director, medical school instructor at the University of Texas, Past President of the Brazos Valley Medical Society and Brazos County Constable. In addition, he was shooting sports instructor for the Texas A&M skeet team, one of his real passions.

A true nature lover and avid outdoorsman, Dr. Marsh was a lifelong rancher "who never missed an opportunity to make or leave the place better than it was before he got here". He spent his retirement years working with his family and friends improving his cattle herd, building a natural wildlife habitat, and educating anyone who was interested in listening about "the importance of hard work, responsibility, professionalism, and civility".

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 44 years, Frances; his son John and his wife Darla; his 2 grandson's Preston and Peyton; his sister Louise Reeves and her husband Neal of Estes Park, CO.; and numerous other family members and friends.

Dr. Marsh was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest son, John Foster Marsh.

Dr. Marsh was a very special person to our family. He served as "our Dr" for many years, taking care of all our needs. He delivered our babies and took care of them after their birth as well as the rest of the family. We feel privilidged have known him, and call him friend. To the Family of Dr. Marsh:
May our awesome God be the lifter of your heads and the encourager of your hearts during your time of bereavement. Dr. Marsh was a wonderful physician. In 1963, I was a new bride and became extremely sick with the flu. My husband called Dr. Marsh and he made a personal house visit to our small garage apartment on Cavitt Street. Not many doctors made house calls in those days. Dr. Marsh also delivered our first born daughter and was our family doctor for many years. Praise God for a man who loved and cared for his patients! Dr. Marsh made a difference by using his education, skills, abilities, and compassion to help mankind.
