John Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2025.
John Randolph Marshall, 78, of Bryn Mawr, PA, and Watertown, CT, passed away September 6, 2025, at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA after a long battle with multiple illnesses.

The first-born son of Julian McIlvaine Marshall and Henrietta Harrison Marshall, Mr. Marshall was born in Scranton, PA. He attended the Haverford School, class of 1965, where he developed what would become a lifelong passion for nature, joining the NPS Student Conservation Program and the Boy Scouts, and finding a love for bird watching. Mr. Marshall went on to attend the Johns Hopkins University before pausing his academic career to enlist in the Doughboys, D Troop, 3rd of the 5th Cavalry. He was deployed to Vietnam where he received several awards for meritorious service, including the Purple Heart and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross. Following his active-duty service, he transferred to the United States Army Reserves, joined the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, and re-enrolled at Johns Hopkins, graduating in 1973.

Mr. Marshall was an avid member of the National Beagle Club through his involvement with the Ardrossan Beagles, where he served as Master and Huntsman. His other passion was genealogy; he was the fourth great-grandson of Chief Justice John Marshall, an honor for which he was recognized by President Eisenhower. It was through this love of genealogy and the AOL Genealogy Forum that he met his wife, Lynn Reilly Bullock. Mr. Marshall moved to Connecticut to be with her and her daughter Caroline Frazier Bullock (1982-2014) and had two children of their own, Elizabeth Starr and Alexander Murray. He shared his love of the world, history, and nature with his children, involving them in the Connecticut Ornithological Association, Audubon Society, and White Memorial Conservation Center. That love of history, as well as his wife, encouraged him to join and support numerous lineage organizations, including the Thomas Turner Association of Virginia, the Society of the Cincinnati, and the Sons of the American Revolution.

Mr. Marshall was predeceased by his parents, Julian and Tenny, as well as his stepdaughter Carly. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lynn; children, Eliza and Alec (Caitlyn); brother, Steve (Helen); sisters, Betsy and Julie Milone (Mike); and countless loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

John was always the first one to crack a joke, tell a story, or teach you something new. He was kind, smart, and valued respect. His family will particularly miss being updated on his Wordle score, learning about what bird he was out looking for today, and listening to his John Wayne westerns play on repeat. He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Thomas Turner Association of Virginia, 8817 Marlow Drive, Spotsylvania, VA 22551 or the Ardrossan Beagles, Inc., 833 Tally-ho Lane, Chester Springs, PA 19425. Burial is private at the convenience of the family. Stuard Funeral Home, Newtown Square, is overseeing the arrangements.

Sandy jordan - John and i were closest friends from day 1 of university. Every one should have a friend that regardless of the need will do anything for you. I tested that belief on more than one occasion. We could go a long time with out talking or seeing each other but nothing ever changed. Always there always my close friends

I was very sad to hear of John's passing.
I had the pleasure of knowing John for over 20 years, as we worked together. He was a dedicated man to many different things his work, bird watching, genealogy to name a few. I would listen to his stories about his days in Vietnam and the Doughboys! I marveled at the fact he survived his injuries from that war.
Working closely with John on projects together was a pleasure as he taught me a lot of what I know today.
I also enjoyed looking at all his pictures of the birds he photographed and his desire to go places when he wanted to get glimpses of birds he hadn't yet seen.
He loved his family, his get togethers with his army buddies and life itself!
John will be truly missed he was a wonderful man!!

I knew John through work. He was talented, intelligent, extraordinarily kind and dedicated to a fault. It was truly an honor to have worked with him. Even after retirement his name would often come up during our weekly meetings... wishing he was still there to help us solve whatever problem had cropped up that day. He was and will be missed dearly. May his memory be a blessing to all those who knew him.

I am sad to learn of John's death. He was master when I first joined Ardrossan and kindly answered all my questions. I learned to identify hawks on the wing from John. Know that I will keep the family in my prayers.
