John Mcerlean Obituary
Firefighters battled to free two men - named locally as John James Mcerlean and Sean Doherty - from the crash scene by River Court.
The men, both aged 27, were pronounced dead at the scene.
There were travelling northbound in a blue BMW when it hit the tree. No other vehicles are believed to be involved.
Emergency services were called at 2.45, and two fire crews from Hitchin were in attendance.
The two men were pulled from the vehicle with the use of Lukas cutting equipment close to 5am.
Officers investigating the accident are appealing for witnesses and information.
PC Andy Ralph, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Policing Unit, said: "I would like to speak to anyone who saw this incident or who believes they may have seen it in the time leading up to the collision.
"I would urge anyone with information to contact me on the police non-emergency number 101."
