John McEVOY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Mar. 11 to Mar. 12, 2016.
McEVOY, John
January 28, 1920 - March 8, 2016
A very special, caring and wonderful man, a beloved father, grandfather and great- grandfather has peacefully left this world's journey at the age of 96 years.
John is survived by his son Terry (Flora) of St. Albert, Alberta and his five grandchildren, Sarah, Christine (Jim), Karen (Chad) all of Calgary, Graham (Katelyn) of Edmonton and Shaun of Vancouver, and three great-grandchildren Ellee, Mila and Max, as well as extended family and friends. John was predeceased by his wife Helen (nee Bachiu), his brother Lloyd and sister Jean Trainor.
John was born and raised in Ottawa and was a prominent junior hockey player before turning pro in the Quebec Hockey League. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940 and served in North Africa, Italy and North West Europe whilst seconded to the Royal Navy. John spent his post-war career with the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. He was also a hockey referee for many years including refereeing the Memorial Cup, the Allen Cup, U.S. Collegiate Hockey and was one of Canada's referees for the Olympic Games in Grenoble, France in 1968. After retirement, John served at the Court House in Ottawa and as a volunteer at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
By his zest for life and people, John was a great inspiration to all who knew him and was blessed with having many close friends including Father Bill Penney, Monica Scribner, Sue Morneau and Richard Van Tassel.
Father Bill Penney will preside at a mass of Christian burial at St. John the Apostle Church 2340 Baseline Road, Ottawa on Monday, the 14th day of March, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior to mass.
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of R2N at the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Centre for their devoted and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Room H2408, 40 Ruskin Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1Y 4W7, or the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre Foundation 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa, Ontario, K1J 5Z6 would be appreciated.

I got to know John while volunteering at the Civic. He is a kind, courteous and generous person: fun to be with, faith-filled and interesting. He will be remembered by many who knew him from his various careers.
My sincere condolences to his entire family.

Dear Terry, Flora & family,
We extend our most heartfelt condolences to you all at this difficult time. My Dad reflects fondly on his friendship with John...from their hockey playing days in Ottawa to refereeing collegiate hockey together. He was truly a gentleman, kind & courteous...who we thoroughly enjoyed visiting prior to his move to the Veteran's Ctr.
God Bless him...
With Our Sympathy,
The Timmins Family

Terry, Flora and family,
I am so very sorry to learn of John's passing. I met John in 2002 when I started to volunteer at the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital. John was 84 and I was 42. We got along so very well despite our age difference. He spoke so fondly of all of you and I almost felt I knew you as he kept me informed of all your accomplishments. He was fiercely proud of his family and steadfast in his faith - two of many characteristics I admired in him. He took me to 'the ship' several times to celebrate our birthdays but my greatest memories stem from the 4 hours we spent together every Wednesday morning at the Information desk for many years. He shared his memories and his wisdom and I feel my life was enriched for having known him. I kept in touch after he stopped volunteering until he seemed not to recognize me any more. He was such a fine man, may he rest in peace.

I worked with John at the courthouse many years ago. He was the perfect gentleman always with the greatest smile and such a beautiful, kind personality. He always spoke so lovingly of his wife and son. May he rest in peace.

We always enjoyed our visits with John, He was my mother (Catherine Shields Trainor) 1st cousin. John always sent a nice Christmas letter until a few years ago. Then he would call. The last time I called him he did not seem to remember who we were. He was a great person who had many interesting stories.
