John McGillicuddy Obituary

McGILLICUDDY John F., the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chemical Bank, and its predecessor, Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, died on January 4, 2009 at his home in Harrison, New York. He was 78 years old. McGillicuddy was married for over 50 years to the former Constance Burtis of Harrison, New York. They resided in Harrison. Along with his wife, he is survived by their five children: Michael Sean (Maureen) McGillicuddy, of Astoria; Faith Burtis (Stephen) Benoit, of Rye; Constance Erin (Jonathan) Mills, of New Canaan, Connecticut; Brian Munro (Kym) McGillicuddy, of Harrison; and John Walsh McGillicuddy, of Harrison. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jean O'Connell, of Harrison, and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home, 1036 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY, on Wednesday from 2-9 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Resurrection Church on Thursday at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Prostate Cancer Research, New York Presbyterian Hospital, 525 East 68th Street, Box 123, New York, NY 10065.

I had the greatest privilege of being a young student friend of John Mc Gillicuddy in 1947. He personally took me, an 8th grader, under his guidance as a senior at Harrison High School. For that single year of companionship, I shall never forget John for his inspiration, understanding, and friendship. We met for the last time at the Denison University graduation of his youngest son and my daughter Susan. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his entire family. Richard A. Coulter

I had the privilege to have worked at Manufacturers Hanover under John McGillicuddy. He was a true gentleman and a true leader.

He managed to make a major corporate bank feel like a small country bank to his employees. Once you had the pleasure to meet him, he never forgot you.

I thank him for having made my many years at Manufacturers the highlight of my career.
