Deeply missed by loving wife of 58 years, Florence Lenihan McHugh; sister, Patricia McHugh; children, Mary McHugh Morrison (George H.), Paul McHugh (Sarah Dore McHugh), John McHugh (Eva Stipl McHugh), Peter McHugh, and James "Jim" McHugh (Mary Veronica McHugh); grandchildren, Michael McHugh (Denisse Velez), Kate Morrison Townes (David A.), Kevin Morrison, Anne Morrison, Claire McHugh, and Julia McHugh; and many nieces and nephews. Jack graduated from Duluth Cathedral High School (valedictorian), and the University of Minnesota Law School where he was on the Law Review Editorial Board and a member of the Iron Wedge Honor Society and Chi Psi social fraternity. He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of St. Thomas, and was a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory by papal appointment. He was most proud of his work as a director of the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries Foundation, Chairman of the St. Paul Urban Coalition, member of the Finance Committee of Hope Community, Minneapolis, and Chairman of the Nicollet Mall Development Committee. In addition he served as: President of the Northwestern National Bank, St. Paul; Director of the Norwest Bancorpation; and President and Vice Chairman Northwestern National Bank, Minneapolis; Chairman of Security State Bank Maple Lake; Director, Minnwest Corporation Bank Group; Trustee, University of St. Thomas; Founding Chair, Grace House AIDS Hospice; Director, The Bush Foundation; Chairman, Minneapolis Downtown Council; Director, Title Insurance Co. of Minnesota; Director, The United Way, St. Paul; Director, The United Way, Minneapolis; Director, Minnesota Orchestral Association; Director, Minnesota Higher Education Facilities Authority; Director, Minneapolis Urban Coalition; Director, Greater Minneapolis Housing Corporation; Chairman, Mayor's Task Force on Economic Development, Minneapolis; Vice President and Director, Upper Midwest Council; Vice President and Director, Minority Enterprise Small Business Investment Corporation; and Advisory Director, Elliott Park Neighborhood Association. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Minneapolis, and the Minikahda Club. Jack attributed his values to his parents; these values shaped his relationships with his wife, Florence, his family and his friends. He was principled, loyal, generous, gentle and kind. He was devoted to helping the less fortunate. Jack had a keen sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and a gift for storytelling. He loved fishing on the Big Horn River in Montana, reading, history, politics, golf, and travel. In his later years he took piano lessons, and theology classes at St. Thomas University. His many letters to the editor were frequently published in the StarTribune and he became a blogger after his 84th birthday. Jack's abiding faith in God inspired his steadfast expressions of unconditional love and support for his family and community. To the McHugh Family,

On behalf of the Maple Lake Recovery Center, we offer our condolences and prayers to you all. In reading Jack's obituary, it came as no surprise to see how involved and caring Jack was to his fellow man. And, as recipients of Jack's kindness and generosity, we hope this time of sorrow for your family will be eased by knowing how Jack continues to make a positve impact on the lives of the adolescents our organization serves.

With our gratitude, may God bless and reward Jack and you all.

Florence and family,
I am so sorry for the loss of Jack who was such a stellar man. Florence, you were a wonderful partner for him, and the 58 years you were together can attest to what it takes to have a real marriage. I was so glad that I spoke with the both of you at church the week before.
I am sorry that I won't be able to make the wake or funeral. My prayers will be with you during this time of emptyness.
Blessings and peace, Adaire

To All of the McHugh Family - Our hearts and prayers are with you all. Jack will be missed very much - he looked well the last time I saw him at my Mom's, Jean Atmore Mars's, 80th Birthday gathering at Wolfgang Pucks place at the Walker a couple of years ago. He will be remembered for his very funny- dry whit humor and wordly knowledge of so many things. Our best wishes are with you all this holiday season. Bill & Corky Mars Shakopee, MN
