John H. McMillan, 82, of New Hartford died December 1, 2012 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare with his family at his side. He was born September 5, 1930 in Tupper Lake, NY, son of the late Daniel and Lena Thierault McMillan. He was educated at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, receiving both his Bachelors and Masters degree. He served with the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1953-55, stationed in Japan, obtaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. John married Marie Eustelle McCauley on November 27, 1958 in Tupper Lake. Eustelle predeceased him in July 2005. John was a tenured professor at Clarkson University prior to moving to New Hartford in 1965 to become a Professor and the Department Head of the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology department at MVCC. He retired in 1991. He held the position of Professor Emeritus and had been inducted into the MVCC Hall of Fame. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, where he served as a lector; a member of the New Hartford American Legion Post # 1376 and a member of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology. He has also served at one time as the Town Engineer for the Town of New Hartford and most recently served on the Storm Water Management Committee. He was a licensed Professional Engineer as well as a Fellow of ASCE. John had a great love of family and enjoyed the time he spent with his children and cherished grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter Maureen Hoffman and husband Ralph of Marcy, his sons Rod McMillan and his wife Denise of Downingtown, PA, Stephen McMillan and his partner Scott Larsen of Las Vegas, NV, James McMillan and his wife Maura of Medfield, MA; his five grandchildren Ryan, Christopher and Lauren Hoffman and Sara and Eric McMillan; his Sister Jean Arseneau and husband Omer of El Paso, TX and a brother Daniel McMillan and his wife Margie of Summerville, SC and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the doctors and staff of the ICU at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. The funeral will be on Wednesday at 9:00 AM from the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford and at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours are on Tuesday from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mohawk Valley Community College to establish a scholarship in his name.
