John MEESTER Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Apr. 14 to Apr. 15, 2015.
MEESTER, John
June 21, 1942 – April 11, 2015
With great sadness we're sharing with you the loss of John Meester and mercifully, the end of his courageous battle with cancer. John passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 peacefully at home, his beloved wife Marg by his side, surrounded by the family he loved and devoted his life to. John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret, children Sandy (Wade), Debbi (John), Patty (Robert), Rob (Jen) and Sue (Glenn) and grandkids Adam (Hillery), Chelsea, Lia, Dana, Meagan, Kade, Carter and Brooke. Brothers Garrit (Janice), and Fred (Jolane), sister Maryke (Gary), brothers-in-law Jack (Linda) and Terry (Tracy) Davison, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Kyla and Alyssa. John was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Annie Meester. John had a long and successful career in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring in 1987 at the rank of Captain, to begin a new career as the General Manager of Hylands Golf Course in Ottawa. John's leadership and drive was instrumental in initiating the local chapter of The Canadian Society Of Club Managers. One of his proudest achievements as local president was the creation of a scholarship program aimed at sustaining and advancing golf course management opportunities for young people who shared his enthusiasm for this profession. Never one to stay idle, John joined the Corps of Commissionaires shortly after retiring from Hylands in 2008 and from there, had a brief sojourn as the Club House Manager at the Prescott Golf Club. In keeping with John's humble origins and quiet, confident demeanour, his family will be hosting a short visitation at noon on Wednesday April 15, 2015 at Pinecrest Cemetery, to be followed by a service honouring his memory and celebrating his life at 1 p.m. in the Chapel. The family would like to thank all those who supported John throughout his illness and request, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre or the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre. Special thanks to Dr. Eapen and Dr. Canill at IGFCC for their care and guidance and also to Dr. Herrington and staff at OICC for the positive impact they had on John and Marg.

I was lucky enough to have known John through business at Highlands. He presented and conducted himself in a way in which most of us would be envious. I have thought of him often over the years since his retirement.
My heartfelt condolences to all of his family.

Mr. Meester, a true gentleman who had motivated and supported me through my studies and athletics. During those significant junior and collegiate years as both a member and employee at Hylands, John and I forged a relationship. During that period in my life, John instilled the importance of values and character; but what I take away that is most important is the leadership quality of engagement. John was a proponent of the culture of the game and the importance of the community aspect. I will carry forward the same philosophy of community and engagement.

Words fall short to describe the loss of a brother. John & I were very close growing up and although we have been geographically separated for about 55 years, the sibling bond survived and remained strong. To Marg and John's family, both mine and Jolane's deepest sympathy and know that you will always be in our thoughts and we hope we will find ways to maintain the family bond in the future.

John was a great man, and helped me start my golf club management career with advice and support whenever I needed it. His love of golf was clear and his dedication to CSCM amazing with many, many years spent serving on the National Board. I will miss him both personally & professionally.

I have never met someone that has made such an impact in my life. I worked for John at Hylands Golf Club as his Office Manager since 1994 until his retirement in 2008. He was a mentor and also a good friend. The memories of our time together will always be in my heart. Marg, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My love to all of you.
