John Mehaffey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2025.
Dr. John D. Mehaffey, 75, of Burleson, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. John was born on January 16, 1950, in Breckenridge, Texas, to Robert E. Mehaffey and Ardelle Mehaffey.

John graduated from Texas A&M University in 1972 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and dedicated his life to the care and well-being of animals, not only through his work but also by caring for the host of animals that lived on their family farm from dogs and cats to emus and rheas.

On June 5, 1971, John married the love of his life, Dorothy, and together they built a beautiful family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, deeply proud of his four children and nine grandchildren.

A lifelong Aggie, John's passion for Texas A&M football and baseball never faltered. He loved cheering on his team, sharing that joy with family and friends, and exemplifying the Aggie spirit in every part of his life.

John will be remembered for his kindness, his unwavering love for his family, and his dedication to both his profession and his community.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his daughter Shannon Mehaffey and husband Michael Bourne; daughter Sara Mehaffey; son John Michael Mehaffey and wife Amy; daughter Suzanne Flanagan and husband Jordan; nine grandchildren: Mallorie Phelps, Garrett Phelps, Ethan Roberts, Willow Roberts, Hattie Mae Mehaffey, Hunter Mehaffey, Hart Mehaffey, Hensley Flanagan and Maddox Flanagan; sister Ann Wood and husband Bob, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert E. and Ardelle Mehaffey and his brother Robert H. Mehaffey.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd at 2pm at First Christian Church in Burleson, Texas. Please wear maroon or something Texas A&M inspired. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Texas Military Forces Historical Foundation.

Directly out of school as a veterinarian, I worked briefly at Southside Veterinary Clinic (as part of a temporary arrangement between Dr. Mehaffey and my primary employer). He was a laid back, kind man with a never ending smile. He was patient and encouraging. Sending peace to his family, friends, and coworkers.

What an honor to have worked for this wonderful man. He was officially my work husband. Lol. He was a great veterinarian. His knowledge was immense. His heart was full of love for his "sweet woman" and his big family. Too many stories to count, but oh how I loved him. What a hole he leaves in your family but knowing he is with our Lord and no longer suffering with this terrible disease. Love you all.
