John Muldowney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 19 to Jan. 24, 2021.
MULDOWNEY, John Joseph "Jack", 82, died peacefully in Richmond, Virginia on January 16, 2021. Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Nancy. Jack is survived by his five children and eight grandchildren, Michael (wife, Frannie and daughters, Suzanne and Colleen), Kevin (wife, Corinna and children, Jack and Bridget), Matthew, a resident of Faith Mission Home in Mission, Virginia since age 10, Mary Leslie (husband, Chuck and sons, Jake and Luke) and Elizabeth (husband, Chet and sons, Asher and Thomas). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph John Muldowney and Elizabeth S. Muldowney; and his sister, Mary Martin Lawrence.

Born on September 27, 1938, Jack was raised and educated in Richmond, Virginia, attending Saint Benedict Parochial School, Benedictine High School (class of 1956) and the University of Richmond where he earned both an undergraduate liberal arts degree and master's degree in business administration.

Jack enjoyed a long and successful career in the investment business, which spanned more than 50 years. Jack's career began in the stockbroker training program at Anderson & Strudwick in 1964 and he was quickly moved into a securities trading position. In 1967, he joined Albert, Proctor & Paine to start and oversee its trading department. Jack joined Scott & Stringfellow in 1970 and would spend the rest of his long and successful business career there. Jack became a partner in 1972 and had primary responsibility for managing the firm's trading department until he retired from that position. Jack remained with the firm as a senior vice president of investments until his final retirement in 2016. Throughout his career, Jack served in leadership and committee positions for many securities industry organizations, including the Virginia Securities Association, National Securities Traders Association, National Association of Securities Dealers and the Securities Industry Association. During his career, he also served as an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers. Jack worked hard and was always grateful for the success he enjoyed. He admired and respected his many partners and colleagues.

Jack was active in the community and his commitment to service was manifested through many charitable works and activities, which included service on the boards of Bon Secours Healthcare Foundation, Saint Francis Home, Mount Calvary Cemetery, Benedictine High School, St. Mary's Woods, Our Lady of Hope Health Care Center, the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Richmond Police Benevolent Association and The Catholic Virginian. He was also very supportive of The Sisters of the Visitation of Monte Maria Monastery in Rockville, Hanover County.

Jack was a lifelong member of Saint Benedict Catholic Church and attended Mass daily at St. Peter's Catholic Church until his retirement. Jack was also a member of the Knights of The Holy Sepulchre.

Jack was a member of the Commonwealth Club of Richmond, the Sons of the American Revolution, the New York Athletic Club and the Piankatank River Golf Club in Middlesex County, located close to his second home on the Piankatank River, where his family and friends spent many "festive" weekends together.

Above all else, Jack loved his wife, Nancy, and his family. Quietly, but firmly, Jack lived his Catholic faith in every aspect of his life and his devotion to his faith was profound and unwavering. Jack set an example for his children and their families that will survive his passing and serve as an unending source of pride and inspiration.

Well done Jack, yours was a life well-lived. We should all be so blessed.

My deepest ympathies to the Muldowney family and friends. I attended St. Benedicts with Michael. He, along with our 8th grade classmates were kind enough, along with Sister Charlotte and Sister Dorothy, to attend my mothers viewing in 8th grade. The Sisters' had been aware my mother was dying at home and I was one of her primary caregivers from middle of 6th to 8th grades until she passed from cancer. Something younger children did not understand then. However, the Muldowney and the Beirne families were very kind members of St. Benedict's. My sincerest condolences for the loss of your father and grandfather. Only the loss of one's own child is more difficult than the loss of our parent at any age. I will always remember your parents for their kindness. Take care.

I share with you my respect for and honor of Jack from our mutual experiences at St Peter Catholic Church at 8th and Grace Streets. God certainly was present within Jack and I experienced God through your very special Father, Grandfather, and faith-filled person. May Jack already be embraced by God for eternity. In peace and hope - Sincerely, The Basmajian Family

Jack was a trusted financial advisor to the Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation for several decades. His guidance was beneficial to the volunteer board members and the young Richmond area student athletes that earned BDSF scholarships. His professionalism was admirable during the various market cycles! Although I do not know his family, I know they have much to celebrate and mourn. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Frank Maloney, past President of the BDSF
