John Newton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2023.
John Newton, 72, of Tucson Arizona, passed away June 21st after several years of illness.

Born to Bill and Virginia Newton, John was the oldest of four children. John grew up in Sandusky, Ohio, graduated from Sandusky High School in 1968 and went on to attend Heidelburg University.

John moved from Sandusky to Toledo where he began working as a medical lab technician at Riverside Hospital in 1972. It was at Riverside Hospital where he met Peggy (Hughes) Newton, and they married in 1973. John and Peggy became foster parents to several children over the years, and parents to five of their own. John worked at Riverside Hospital for 30 years until it's closure in 2002 where staff then moved to St Anne hospital. John worked at St. Anne until his retirement in 2005.

After retiring John fulfilled his wish of moving to warmer weather and moved to Tucson, Arizona where he lived the remainder of his years.

John will be remembered for his vast knowledge that he attributed to his love of reading. He believed "a day without learning was a day wasted". John loved collecting new and used books, especially by author Clive Cussler. John could often be seen watching movies and TV shows and was a proud owner of a very large collection of VHS and DVDs. Some of his favorites included "Used Cars" and "Greedy". John will also be remembered for his love of memorabilia and collectibles.

John loved music, especially rock. He was a trumpet player for many years, and often told stories of playing in the Cedar Point band when living in Sandusky. John enjoyed live music and theatre, and once acted in a Toledo Repertoire Theatre production of "A Christmas Carol".

John is survived by his children, Tom Newton, Tim Newton, Alicia (Jon) Jaffe, Sarah (Derreck) Newton, and Teresa (Andrew) Harding. Siblings Bill (Becky) Newton, Mike (Linda) Newton and Nancy (Jeff) Cullen. He is preceded in death by his parents William "Bill" Newton, Virginia "Ginny" Newton, and grandson Christopher.

To honor John's wishes, there will be no immediate funeral service held. There will be a friends and family gathering in Toledo at a future date. Please contact a family member for more information.

I knew John for a handful of years and during that time I saw a very good and considerate man with this sweet enthusiasm, this whimsy for a bunch of little things in life. He was very thoughtful as he always treated me with kindness and care. I love this sweet soul and I am thankful for that period of time in which I got to know him. God bless you John and bless your family and friends. My heart goes out to you all. *Hugs* and prayers

One of my earliest, best memories is of Dad's big, weathered hand holding mine as we walked to one of his favorite events, Party in the Park downtown Toledo. His excitement over live shows, finding new TV shows and movies and new treasures, will be missed the most. Thankful he is no longer suffering. May the memories of good times help us through this difficult time.
