John Opiela Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
John Opiela, 89, of Middleburg, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Born in Dupont, PA on April 18, 1936, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Kuna) Opiela. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Opiela for 61 years. He devotedly cared for her through her challenging illness until her passing. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather.

John graduated from Dupont High School and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. He was drafted and served in the United States Army twice. John enjoyed working as a pharmacist for over 40 years before his retirement. He raised his family in Laflin, PA for 35 years, then moved to Northampton, PA for 13 years before moving to Middleburg. In life, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved playing tennis, fishing, painting, playing games, sudoku puzzles, watching sports (especially seeing Penn State, the Eagles and Phillies win), and listening to late night radio for hours on end. He also enjoyed going out to eat or just talking with his neighborhood friends.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Dorothy, he is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Opiela and sister, Delores Charney.

Survivors are: Daughters Kathleen Burns (Jacksonville, FL) and Karen Lynott (Bethlehem, PA) and husband Paul. Son, John Opiela (Frankfort, IL) and wife Bernadette. Grandchildren: Ryan, Nathan, and Alexandra Lynott, Tyler and Kristen Opiela, and David Burns. Multiple nieces and nephews.

Services are planned on September 8 at 10:30 am at St. Luke Catholic Church, Middleburg, Florida.
