John Overton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2024.
John Wayne Overton passed away on October 17, 2024. He was born on September 12, 1948, in Kansas City, MO, to Mary LaDonna (Reedy) Overton and Orville Wayne Overton, dance instructors at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. As their son, John embraced their love for music and dance.

John began playing the guitar as a teenager, embarking on a lifelong music journey. During his time at Bishop Miege High School, he formed the rock-n-roll band "Questions" with his friend Bob Bibb, a friendship that has lasted a lifetime. While attending Benedictine College, John not only played in a soul band but also met the love of his life, Catherine. John and Cathy married in 1971 and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.

John and Cathy shared a deep passion for folk dance and Celtic folk music, often performing together in various groups. Besides his musical talents, John was a devoted father and grandfather, finding joy in building imaginative worlds with his grandson on Minecraft. He dedicated most of his career to the railroad industry until his retirement.

John is survived by his loving wife Cathy; his son Chris Overton and daughter-in-law Rachel; his daughter Nicole Boyce and son-in-law Craig; and his cherished grandchildren, Declan and Gemma, who will deeply miss his witty sense of humor and loving presence. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM at the Town Hall in Shawnee Town at 11600 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203. The family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, donations be made to Disabled American Veterans.

By living in Texas, I often don't hear about my relatives, even with social media. I recently learned of John's passing from my oldest sister. John was a lovely man, and I'm so happy I was able to have a conversation with him and Cathy at a family reunion which doesn't seem that long ago, but the years they pass. John will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to Cathy and her family.
