REIDSVILLE - John Douglas Pettigrew, Sr., 85, of 567 Rockingham Lake Road, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at Penn Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 5, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Milton Kennon, Jr. officiating. The interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery with Military graveside rites.
Mr. Pettigrew was born in Reidsville, to the late John McKinnley Pettigrew and Mattie Meeks Pettigrew. After graduation, he joined the Army, June 6, 1942, to serve in World War II in the 28th Division 109th Inf, 204th Military Police Co., serving in Southern France, Algeria, French Morocco, Sicily, Rome, Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars with one Bronze Star Service Arrowhead, and Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged, September 1st, 1945. He also retired from the American Tobacco Co. after 43 years of service. He delighted in telling of his adventures with all his friends at the Penrose Mall. He was a good father, avid hunter and fisherman, and sports enthusiast. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Reidsville, the Moose Lodge #864 in Eden and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Hooper.
He is survived by his son, John Douglas "Doug" Pettigrew, Jr. and wife, Susie of Reidsville; Doug's mother, Ila Mae Pettigrew, of Dobson; step-granddaughter, Msgt. Connie S. Carey of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; step grandson, Jeffrey L. Barker of High Point; step great grandchildren, Lindsay Daniels and Patrick Carey of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. and Brittany and Kristin Barker of High Point; brother, William Henry Pettigrew and wife, Dorothy of Eden; aunts, Mamie Woolery of Wilmington, Del. and Della Walker of Danville, Va.; four nieces and one nephew and great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at Doug and Susie's home, 544 Rockingham Lake Road.
Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1216 Grooms Road, Reidsville, N.C. 27320; or the Salvation Army, 704 Barnes St., Reidsville, N.C. 27320.
