John Kenneth Phares, passed away peacefully at home in the company of family on 11 August, 2021 at the age of 93. Born in Kerns WV to Elaine Phares, he was lovingly raised by Nellie and Arthur Vance in Onego, WV.

John was honorably discharged from the US Army with Sharpshooter and Marksman qualifications and graduated with a BS in Business Administration from West Virginia University. He retired from Sunoco as a Marine Engineer.

John is survived by his wife Shirley Kathleen (nee Lantz), Shirley’s daughter Mary Beth Okes (Jim), sons John Eric Phares (Geri), Kenneth Robert Phares PhD (Theresa), and Joel Michael Phares MD (Alyssa), grandsons Brandon Phares, Trevor Phares, Bryce Phares, Michael Phares, George Phares, Scott Okes and Wesley Okes, and great granddaughter Elisabeth Breanne Okes.

John was a private, quiet man who loved his family and took pride in their accomplishments. He enjoyed walking outdoors in nature, and paying attention to all of the extended family’s numerous dogs. He found peace in his Christian faith and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are invited to Gather on Tuesday, August 17th, from 9:30 AM to 11 AM at Asbury United Methodist Church, Cinnaminson, NJ with funeral services following at 11 AM. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2011 at 11:00 AM, at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton WV, with Military Honors conducted by the Camp Dawson representatives. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a donation be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cinnaminson, NJ.
