John Pinchbeck Obituary

Published by Danbury News Times & The Ridgefield Press on Dec. 21, 2020.
John Pinchbeck
John Pinchbeck, 82, retired Tree Warden of the Town of Ridgefield passed away on Wednesday, December 15. He was the loving husband of Marie (Spreitzer) Pinchbeck. John was born on November 8, 1938, in Ridgefield; a son of the late Joseph Green and Effie (Washburn) Pinchbeck. He grew up on a farm with his brothers and sister, caring for the animals and learning the Florist and Nursery business. As soon as he was tall enough to reach the counter he was making arrangements.
He graduated from St. Luke's School in 1956. He was a member of the Football Team. He graduated from Cornell University, College of Agriculture with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army.
After their wedding in 1962 at First Congregational Church in Ridgefield, John and Marie lived in Stuttgart, Germany with the U.S. Army for 2 years. He worked for Military Intelligence. His daughter, Carrie Ann, was born in 1986 and today is an Emergency Medicine Physician.
A lifelong resident of Ridgefield, John owned and operated the former Pinchbeck Bros. Florist and Nursery of Ridgefield with his two brothers, Joseph H. and his twin, Jay. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield for over 69 years, a former Rotarian, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. John loved collecting antique tools, working with his tractor, and of course caring for trees. He was a walking Encyclopedia of Trees.
John was a person who thought about service above self. He received numerous awards during his tenure as Tree Warden, notably for The Greening of Ridgefield and Tree City, USA. He worked with The Ridgefield Tree Committee identifying and publishing Ridgefield's Notable Trees.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie; his daughter, Carrie and her husband Brandon; his brother Jay and his wife Dale; and his sister Sylvia Sturges. Nephews Jim Sturges and his wife CeCe; Don Sturges and his wife Tina; Chris Pinchbeck and his wife Lyndsay; and Seph Pinchbeck and his wife Jane. Nieces Charlene Kuehn; Peggy Jo Pinchbeck; Paulette Pinchbeck Smith and her husband Jim; Pamela Pinchbeck Gilette and her husband Jeff; Laurie Pinchbeck Whitsel and her husband Brad; 12 great-nieces and nephews; 4 great-great-nephews. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Joseph H. Pinchbeck and his wife Ethylyn, brother-in-law, John Sturges, and great niece Kristina Kuehn.
Funeral services will be held privately. A memorial service and celebration of life will take place at a future date.

I’m just so choked up. What an amazing guy; and one of my all time favorite bosses. Still treasure all I learned from him working at Pinchbecks. Still amazed that this larger than life man showed me how to arrange flowers, grade roses for the New York flower market, take care of plants of all kinds, and always put the customer first. I truly treasure my years there with John, Joe, Sylvia and the entire Pinchbeck family. Sincere condolences.
