John D. Rudek

West Newton— Mr. John D. Rudek, of West Newton, died in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on May 28, 2022. He was 80 years old. John was born in Chicopee on May 15, 1942, the son of the late John W. and Claire (Millette) Rudek. He was a graduate of Chicopee High School and he continued his studies at the Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry. He had owned and operated J.D. Rudek Dental Laboratory in Wellesley and later in Newton where he enjoyed a successful career as a dental lab technician until his retirement. John also had served with the Massachusetts Army National Guard. John also worked as a beloved crossing guard for generations of schoolchildren in the City of Newton for more than 30 years; it was a job and pastime he truly loved. He knew the children by name and was affectionately called "Officer John" by the students of Williams Elementary School as he helped them safely navigate the intersection of Grove Street and Woodland Road. In sunshine, rain, wind or snow he loved greeting the children at the beginning and end of each school day. In addition to his kind nature and willingness to help anyone, he was also known for being a reliable handyman who could assist with any task. From completing small projects around the house to clipping coupons to maintaining a meticulous tomato garden, he always finished the job with a smile. He was wonderful cook, enjoyed watching the New England Patriots, dancing with his wife, and especially loved the outdoors. He spent happy days vacationing in Aruba and Bermuda, and fishing with his wife and stepson at Hale Reservation in Westwood. He appreciated everything nature had to offer. He could be seen feeding curious squirrels in the yard and the ducks in the Charles River, and also enjoyed bird watching. In addition to his beloved wife of thirty-one years, Susan J. (Sbardelli) Rudek, he leaves his children, David J. Rudek of Hyannis and Nadine C. Rudek-Kelly of Berkley; his step-children, Nicole T. Thibeault of Merrimac and Brian D. Thibeault of Oceanside, California; and five grandchildren. Family and friends will honor John's life by gathering for a calling hour on Thursday, June 2nd from 9:00 - 10:15 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton followed by his funeral Mass celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee.
