"I've had a good life."said Mr Rudel, as we scanned Lake Ontario's stark horizon, from our sand swept bench. He looked directly at Nan,as he spoke.
I marvelled at this man,who saw only the sun, while inwardly, I carped at the wind, that pierced our skin, cutting close to our very bones.
That fifteen year old memory has become a gentle lesson for me. I couldn't help but stand back in wonder at this man, who lived with the after effects of his traecheotomy, and the major losses of his beloved Ruby and Ted,
with such courage and grace.
That sunny, but windy moment is but one of the memories for which I will always be grateful to him.
I know I am not alone in the warm memories he has given to me, nor in the heartfelt condolences that I extend with profound sorrow to Nan,John,Merrill, Subrata,Trina and Tyler, and Sheila.
I hope the memory of his sunny, irrepressible disposition will accompany all of you, through mourning your truly great loss.

John Merrill Rudel's legacy will live on in the vibrant and meaningful lives of his children, especially Nan Rudel Basu and John Rudel. Their selflessness, concern for others and aesthetic sensibilities provide a fitting tribute to their father and mother, Jocko and Ruby. The Rudel children are loved by their friends far and wide, today and always. May their father rest in peace.
