John Sager Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 23 to Oct. 23, 2017.
(News Story) DESHLER, Ohio - John Sager, a singer who won acclaim across northwest Ohio and in his adopted hometown of Branson, Mo., where he found a career in musical performance, died Sunday in his Branson home. He was 48.

"John had a massive heart attack. It was totally unexpected," his sister, Susan Myers said.

Mr. Sager won the 2003 Toledo Idol contest, followed by wins in 2004 of Erie Street Idol, in which he received the only perfect score among 240 competitors, and Findlay Idol. He gained exposure by opening for Grammy winner B.J. Thomas at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo and former teen idol Bobby Rydell at the Ritz Theatre in Tiffin.

He started piano lessons at age 9, played trombone and tuba in the Patrick Henry High School band, and as a junior and senior was named the school's best male vocalist. He sang for weddings and other occasions.

"He enjoyed playing and being in front of an audience," his sister said.

He had a knack for dealing with people and became the sales manager of the auto dealership run by his father, James Sager.

"He had personality plus," his mother, Janet Sager, said. With his father's retirement imminent, Mr. Sager in 2009 moved to Branson, a hub for tourists drawn by the town's entertainment offerings.

"He decided this was his time," his mother said.

As a further incentive, he'd earlier fared well in a Branson singing contest, he said in a 2013 video for a prospective Food Network show.

"If I didn't give it a shot, I'd never know," Mr. Sager said in 2013. He made a splash in his first job, busing tables at Mel's Hard Luck Diner, a Branson venue known for its singing servers.

"I was the only singing buser in the whole diner," Mr. Sager said then. "Servers ended up getting upset with me because I ended up selling more CDs than they did."

Eventually he recorded five multi-disc albums. He continued singing as a Mel's server. He also created his own shows at other Branson venues, performing classic rock, country, and soul and his own songs in a smooth baritone. He was a two-time winner of the best male vocalist of Branson award and was honored for his 2011 Gospel-themed CD. During the winter, he performed in the Rio Grande valley of southern Texas.

"Making people happy was his goal, and seeing people smile," his sister said.

He was born Oct. 13, 1968, in Quebec City, Que., adopted by the Sagers when he was 6 months old. In recent years, he learned that his biological father, the late Andre Page', was a musician and got to meet his biological siblings, sisters Lynda, Johanne, Sylvie, Josee', and Irmarie, and brother, Normand.

He was a 1987 graduate of Patrick Henry High and attended Tiffin University. He was a former president of the Deshler Chamber of Commerce and organized a Relay For Life in Henry County.

Also surviving are his daughter, Brooke Sager; parents James and Janet Sager; sister, Susan Myers, and brother, Steve Sager.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, Deshler, where he was a member. Arrangements are by Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler.

The family suggests tributes to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

To John Sager's family,

My next door neighbor bought John's cds in Texas when they wintered. She moved to memory loss assistance.

I bought many of her cds which were 2 of John's. LUCKY ME!

I have loved his voice, perfect enunciation of each word where I heard words I never understood from the original singer's version.

I came on here looking for him not knowing he passed away 7 years ago.

I have LOVED FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE CD. While listening to them, I have played each 3-4 times straight as they are so comforting to listen to.

My heartfelt sympathies to each of you of your dad, etc.

They will have special meaning to me as I play them now knowing he is in heaven looking over you, his family members.

Although it has been 2 yrs since John's passing, it remains painful. He was a remarkable man and a very talented entertainer. Although I love listening to his music, it is not even comparable to seeing in person. Miss you , John!

To all the Family of John Sager. It was a shock for me to find this out just today. Our first time to Branson and we were looking for somewhere to eat breakfast and that was where he was performing. He was such a sweetheart and we stayed so long that we landed up eatting lunch too. He came by us and laughed and asked if the food was that good then he will see us again tomorrow. And my friend laughed so hard and said well the foods not bad but my friend fell in love with your eyes and music and didn't want to leave and we are leaving tomorrow. We were planning to head up there for Labor Day and pulled out my flier I brought home back then
When I googled his name my heart dropped to the floor. I was so hoping to see him again and buy some more CD's which I couldn't buy then due to short on funds so I only bought 2. Well my deepest deepest Sympathy to all his family for their loss. My heart aches along with all of you.God Bless , Joyce Castaneda

Hope you and Elvis are having some laughs

Was lucky enough see and hear him preform at a restaurant in Branson two years ago. Such a lovely voice. Was just listening to a tape I had purchased at the time and was wondering where his career had taken him and couldn't it when I saw he had passed away. What a loss.

We saw John perform at our county fair in Iowa the summer of 2016, without a doubt an amazing talent, voice and unmatched personality. I just googled his name while listening to one of his songs and was so shocked when I read of his passing. Such a terrible loss but our Lord added a beautiful voice and soul to his Angelic Choir. I bought a couple of his music CD's that day and I will forever play and treasure them.

I dearly loved John and can't believe he met this untimely death. I was not aware of his death until today, Dec. 12. I first heard him in the Rio Grande Valley in 2014 where he performed during the winter months. I had hoped I would see him again someday. His C. D.s are my absolute favorites. I have been enjoying his Christmas ones lately.

John sang for our FCRV Campvention at the Iowa Amana Colonies in July 2013. He instantly became one of our most favorite singers. We bought a couple of cd's there (& last year replaced one we "wore out"). Since 2013, we

We bought a couple of cd's there (& last year replaced one we "wore out"). Since 2013, we've gone to Branson twice and always went to the Diner a couple of times each trip to specifically see and hear John sing.. and buy more cds. John was my "adopted" son in Branson. Yes, we all loved him and wanted him a part of our lives. His voice was among the best anywhere. I play his CD's all the time and remember the good times we had. John was so thrilled to be able to meet his birth family and wanted to blend the two families. The memories will live on as his voice will. He is now leading the angels in the choir!

I saw him preform just once, but that was enough to make me a life time fan. I loved how he interacts with his audience, making them a part of his show. I loved how he treated his little dog, Chewy. He will be sorely missed by those that encountered him throughout his life. I can't believe he is gone. He is no longer here, yet he is everywhere.

John was such a wonderful entertainer and a genuine man. His spirit sparkled through his smile. I first met him at the Red Hat Society Wichita, KS Convention.
He was drawn to my costume, you couldnt miss me in my funny very large blow up bra Birthday Cake Costume...lol. (you can see here). He wanted my picture with him...he said, "Remove your salad from your shelf (my fake boobs)..maybe you should think of getting a reduction". I will forever have John in my heart...sometimes God needs the good ones too! See you in heaven John

We were truly blessed to have met John on Saturday, 9/16/17 at Mel's Hard Luck Diner. He was our waiter and we loved his wit, humor and his voice. He sang Hallelujah for us and we bought several of his CD's. What we were impressed most with John was his faith and our conversation of how blessed he felt he was. We will miss him, even if we only knew him a short time, we shared our faith and love of music. Our deepest sympathies to his family. Denny and Barb Zach
