SIDNEY — John W. Sargeant, 86, of Sidney, passed away at 6:43 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community.

He was born on June 1, 1930, in Shelby County, Ohio, the son of the late Cleo and Gertrude (Weissinger) Sargeant.

On Sept. 3, 1950, he married Jeanette M. Frazier, who survives along with their three children, Julia Barker, Jay (Elaine) Sargeant and Jeff (Nancy) Sargeant, all three of Sidney; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Barker, Matthew Sargeant, Megan (Erik) Zarnitz, Brett (Courtney) Barker, Kevin Sargeant, Ciara Sargeant and Kandis Sargeant; two great-grandchildren, Torrin and Taylor Barker; and one brother, Robert Sargeant, of Marco Island, Florida.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Herman Sargeant, one sister, Shirley Draper, and one son-in-law, Scott Barker.

John was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He was an industrialist and co-founder/owner of Sidney Tool & Die Inc. for 59 years, as well as co-founder/owner of Bensar Developments Co., and SMT Industries Inc. His philanthropy locally and throughout the state of Ohio supported numerous organizations' special projects and missions.

John was an avid fisherman, sports enthusiast, farmer, and devoted family man as his most enjoyable experiences were spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

John was a member of Sidney American Legion Post 217, F&AM Temperance Lodge 73, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Shrine of Dayton, and Sidney Rotary Club, where he served as past president.

The family extends a special thanks to the following organizations: Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Wilson Health, Ohio's Hospice of Miami County, and The James Cancer Hospital for the care and compassion given to John and his family.

John was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, where a funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor James Oates and Larry Oberdorf officiating. Burial with military honors performed by the Sidney American Legion will be at Cedar Point Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave. A Masonic Service will be held Wednesday evening at 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: A Kid Again, The Community Foundation of Shelby County, or Ohio's Hospice of Miami County in John's memory.

Deepest sympathy to the Sargeant family
In 1990 I came to Sidney and became partners at SMT with a great deal of help from two brothers Bob and John Sargeant, and Don Bensman
I was very fortunate in having John as a partner for the last 26 years.
He regularly stopped in offering encouragement.
I was able to visit with John recently and he spoke of how helpful his children had been, and how grateful he was for family, and the care he had received. John was as usual positive, and kind.

Fond Regards
