John D. "Chief" Schuback, 89, a lifelong resident of the Austin Heights section of Old Forge, entered into eternal rest on Thursday afternoon at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His beloved wife, whom he deeply loved and cared for, the former Joan Evelyn Jerry Schuback, passed away Oct. 4, 2012.
Born in Old Forge, he was the son of the late Michael and Viola Taylor Schuback was a 1951 graduate of Old Forge High School. John served our country with the United States Army during the Korean war. Following his military service, John received his bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton in 1959. Prior to his retirement, John was the manager of the Old Forge Liquor Store. For many years, he proudly served the Borough of Old Forge as Fire Chief. He was a parishioner of Prince of Peace Parish and a member of the Eagle McClure Hose Company. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Throughout his life, Chief had a passion for gardening, starting the seeds in the early spring, tilling the garden, and then reaping the fruit of his labor with the canning process. Chief was a quiet and modest man, who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Although he will be missed beyond measure, there is joy in knowing he is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Evelyn, and all his loved ones who had gone before him.
Surviving is a daughter, Lisa Gintoff and her husband, Vince; a son, Jack, all of Old Forge; his best friend, Joe Kellick, who he has known since childhood and each day they enjoyed a cup of buttermilk together aka an adult beverage; and his caregiver, Bonnie Jezorwski; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael and a sister, Winifred.
Family and friends are invited to attend John's funeral, which will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, by the Rev. August Riccardi. Interment with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Old Forge. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
