John Sharrah Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 23 to Mar. 24, 2021.
John Harley Sharrah

John Harley Sharrah died peacefully at home on March 19, 2021. He was born May 21, 1931, in Ely, Nevada, to Irene Dunkle Sharrah and Harley Henry "Buck" Sharrah. He enlisted in the army in 1949 after graduating from Churchill County High School in Fallon, Nevada, and he served in Korea in the 1st Calvary Division. Upon returning from Korea, he used his VA benefits to attend Modesto Junior College and UC Davis. He served as student body president at both (winning at UC Davis as a write-in candidate). After receiving a BS Degree in Zoology from UC Davis, he went to Sacramento State University and earned his BS in Civil Engineering and found a calling.

After three years working in the Sacramento area, John moved with his family to Redding, California, in 1964. Anderson River Park is John's most enduring legacy of his time with the City of Anderson Public Works Department. After leaving the work with the city, John worked as a civil engineer both independently and in partnerships. He co-founded the engineering firm Sharrah Dunlap Sawyer, Inc. He "retired" in 1998 when he sold his share of the company, but he could not stay retired long and continued to do engineering work until his death. His exceptional engineering skills, along with his knowledge of the geological and hydrological features of the north state, made him a wealth of knowledge for developers and friends. He often sketched initial plan ideas on napkins or scrap paper just from a plot survey. He cared not only about land use but also the aesthetics of a project. John's impact on Shasta and Tehama counties' development in his 55-year career was profound. His professional excellence earned recognition by former Governor Pete Wilson when John was appointed to the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for the Central Valley Region in 1997.

John served in the Army National Guard through 1973 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.

In addition to his professional work, John's second family was his Anderson Rotary Club. A member since 1964, John served as president, was awarded several awards over the years, and was known as the "chowder cook" for the annual Crab feed. His passion for philanthropy extended beyond his work with Rotary to numerous other organizations in the north state area. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Board Member for the Lassen Park Foundation and on the Board of Directors for the Community Revitalization and Development Corporation.

An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed fishing - whether on Lake Shasta, the coastal waters off Crescent City, the Bering Sea, or Key West's gulf waters. He included many friends on his trips to Kodiak or Adak, Alaska, to fish with his son, Mike.

John loved his children and grandchildren, always finding ways to make their time shared fun and memorable. His great-grandchildren loved sitting at his counter as he popped them popcorn in his fancy machine.

In 2012, John reconnected with his first love, Ruth Fitz (Pintar), and they spent the last eight years together. She shared John's passion for philanthropy. Together, they relished time socializing with special friends and enjoying Mt. Lassen's view from the family room and the deck outside.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill Horlacher, and four grandchildren- Thomas Adam Sharrah, John Jacob Trujillo, Amanda Jane Forrest, and Bryan Gabriel Forrest - John is survived by Ruth, daughters Debra Sharrah and Patty Sharrah Montague (Tyler), son Mike Sharrah, grandsons Clark Montague (Margaret), Ben Montague (Caroline), Shawn Trujillo, and William Forrest, granddaughter Shelby Montague (Jeff Winer), and great-grandchildren Matthew, Lily, and Abigail Sharrah; Ethan and Porter Montague; Bryan and Ronnie Miller, and Adelyn and Johnathan Winer.

John Sharrah was beloved by many and will be greatly missed. A private family service will occur on March 24, and a celebration of life for family and friends will be on May 22 at Anderson River Park. For those who wish to honor his memory, donations may be made to the John Sharrah Fellowship at Anderson Rotary, the Lassen Park Foundation, or Trinity UMC in Anderson, CA - his church home for the past two years.

I am sad knowing I missed hearing about John´s passing. I moved to Redding in 1990 after traveling to work there for almost 2 years. I found John early on when our interests aligned on property development in the area. We became fast friends. Always such a giving person, we fished a lot; he taught me how to cut my own Christmas tree! Always a new experience awaited. He was an amazing, kind & gentle soul. God bless his family. He will truly be missed!

I met John in 1982 when he and his then wife Nancy hired me to help as secretary/bookkeeper assistant in their Red Bluff office. Not long after John Dunlap and Frank Sawyer joined him to become Sharrah Dunlap Sawyer. For the next 9 years I had the privilege to work under John's direction (both Johns and Frank actually!). These were years that I will never forget as they were my foundation for my future career. John was a funny, loving, and relaxed guy. I'll never forget the time when the office moved to Redding and SDS rented both the downstairs and upstairs from Don Gallino. There were no stairs installed yet inside, but John found a ladder and crawled through the hole in the ceiling to get to his office upstairs. What a character! He will be truly missed and forever loved.

John worked out of the Redding SHN office for the past 12 years. During that time, I would talk with John as he came in to work. He was always doing something or planning/designing something. And, he was always so optimistic. A few times I would ask him about things that would happen to his mini-van (he parked right in front of my office). Like the time he had part of an arrow sticking out of his front bumper. I think he just laughed that one off and said "grandkids"!
He was a very generous man also and he had invited myself and my family to a rotary dinner function a few times or gave me tickets to a function.
John, thanks for the never ending optimism. You will be missed.

To the Sharrah Family: I met John working in the Elections Department when he would come in and run for the Central Committee. He was always so nice and interesting to talk to. I was always happy to run into him around townand especially loved his clam chowder at the Crab Feed. He gave alot to his community. My sympathy on your loss. I hope all your wonderful memories of your Dad help sustain you at this time.

The Gallino Family extends it deep sympathy to John's family. He lived life large, never missing an opportunity to share his endless optimism, his love of community and his forward thinking. A dedicated engineer, he built communities not just buildings. We've been friends for 50 years and his vision, wisdom and humor are irreplaceable. We, the community and his family have lost a true treasure.
Godspeed good friend.

John was an amazing, sting and varying person I got to know him over the years through Anderson Rotary when my Step-Dad, Sam was president of the rotarian group. He will be greatly missed, and he made an impact on our community. My condolences to his family.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Mr. John Sharrah. I met him when I worked as secretary for the City of Anderson in the Planning, Building and Public Works Depts. He was one of the kindest and sweetest gentlemen I've ever met. I remember when he would come in and was waiting for staff to look at his project; he would always notice my animal pictures and we would discuss our love for animals. He was such an intelligent engineer and I will never forget him. Rest in peace in Heaven Mr. Sharrah, I am so honored to have known you.
