John Skvarla Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2014.
Dr. John J. Skvarla died Sunday, March 2, 2014, following a brief illness. He was 78. Dr. Skvarla was born March 30, 1935, in Passaic, New Jersey to Joseph E. Skvarla and Emma Wolsko Skvarla. He earned his bachelor's degree in geology from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, a master's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Ph. D. in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Skvarla joined the Department of Botany and Microbiology at the University of Oklahoma in 1965 as an Assistant Professor in charge of the then embryonic Electron Microscope Facility on the OU campus. His career at OU spanned forty-five years. A prolific writer, Dr. Skvarla had over 200 referenced publications on pollen morphology and ultrastructure and has made numerous presentations at scientific meetings both nationally and internationally. He retired in 2010 as a George Lynn Cross Research Professor of Botany after 45 years of service but continued active research at the university, where he collaborated with colleagues at the University of Texas, Smithsonian Institution, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland, Kew Gardens in London, The University of Stockholm and the Komarov Botanical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2006, he was recognized for his contributions to botanical research at the annual meeting of the American Botanical Society in Vancouver, British Columbia.

John was an enthusiastic fly fisherman, who loved summers in Colorado pursuing the wily trout. He loved sports and was a lifelong fan of both the Yankees and the Texas Longhorns. He was the ultimate family man. He accompanied his wife to numerous quilt shows and enjoyed every minute of it. He never missed a child's softball game and always encouraged the team members to do their best. In short, everybody loved him. He found all types of people interesting and loved to hear their stories. He never missed Mass unless he was sick. He was a precious man.

John was preceded in death by his parents, son, John Mathew and daughter, Tracy Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna Skvarla of the home, daughter
Emily Skvarla, of Chicago, daughter Jeanne Johnson, son-in-law Dr. Mark Johnson and grandchildren, Lilly and Gabe Johnson of Catania, Sicily.

The family has designated the Bridges Project as appropriate for remembrances of John. 1670 Stubbeman Ave., Norman, OK 73069.

John was a very special person, an outstanding scientist and yet one of the most modest men I have ever met. I owe John so much for many years of collaboration and friendship and my thoughts are with Donna and his family on this anniversary and I pray that his soul may rest in peace.

Dear Donna: I am so sorry to hear about John. He was a wonderful man. I never could pronounce his last name, so I just called him "John Ska". He got a kick out of that and that was the name that I would put on the ticket at Freemon"s when you and he would order. I will miss him very much, but hope to see you this summer. Always a friend, Linda Hunter

Dear Skvarla family, my deepest condolences on the loss of a truly amazing man and scientist. John and I had amazing discussions about plants and life in general during my time at OU. His enjoyment of life and innate curiosity of the world around him will be missed, but it will also live on in the lives of those who knew him.

Dear Donna and Family. I am so very sorry to hear of John's passing. I worked with him at the Biological Survey for 18 years and loved him dearly! He always treated me as an equal even though I was just a secretary. We shared many funny jokes and he always had a smile on his face. He will be truly missed as a person and as a scholar. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

My sincerest sympathy on the loss of your husband and father. I enjoyed working with him when I was the departmental secretary for Botany/Microbiology in the 70's. He sponsored a scholar from Kew Gardens in London who has become a lifelong friend. He was a scholar and a gentleman. Danell Landes (Houston, TX)

Donna,
Although I haven't seen you and John in a couple of years, I wanted to let you know how happy and privileged I was to have met two of my grandparent's (George & Sarah Cozad) best friends. Every summer we had lunch at Freeman's I could see more and more why they chose you both as friends. You both were always very loving, kind, and took interest in how our lives were going. I wish we would've seen each other more during the year. You are in my families' thoughts and prayers, and thank you for sharing memories with us. Sincerely, Sarah Fitzsimmons (Margaret Cozad's daughter)
