John SLINGER Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Dec. 24, 2011.
SLINGER, John
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Slinger, a loving husband, father and grandfather. John passed away peacefully surrounded by his 'gang' on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the Civic Hospital. John was born in Tranmere, Cheshire, England in 1922. He was the son of Joseph and Isobel Slinger, the third in a family of six children - Douglas, Muriel, our Johnny, Dorothy, Sheila and Peter. During the second World War he enlisted and served with the Royal Air Force. In 1952 he immigrated to Canada and shortly after married Pauline Ellenor who was his beloved wife and partner for fifty-eight years and the mother of his five children. He had a long and successful career with the federal government. His keen intelligence and attention to detail earned him the post of Chief Specification Writer for Public Works. John and Pauline built a cottage up at the lake where John enjoyed many pleasurable days throughout his life. He is lovingly remembered as a man of grace, intelligence, strength and honour. His kindness, charm and wit brought much joy to his family. In his wake he is held dear in the memories and hearts of his wife Pauline and his children Kathleen, Douglas, Jane, Carol and Geoffrey; his grandchildren Jonathan, Jason, Reg, Shane, Storm, Michelle and Sam. We hold him in our hearts with abiding love and constant remembrance. The family appreciates the attentive and compassionate care Dr. Rossman has provided throughout the years. Special thank you to the staff on A5 who provided excellent care. Donations in remembrance of John may be made to the Ottawa Food Bank.
For tho' from out our bourne
of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
when I have crossed the bar.

Dear Jane

I know from working you with the past few years, how much your Dad was cherished in your family.

I also know from working with you how much of a sense of humour your family has. I imagine that your Dad would be tremendously proud of his family. My heart goes out to you in the next year when you go through all the 'first's.
