John Speck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 22 to Feb. 23, 2004.
JohnO . Speck "Johnny"  John was a man of integrity, and he was noted for his hard work, honest business dealings and determination. He survived the great depression, started work in the coal mines as a child and worked his way to a successful businessman in building and land development. His building accomplishments are found throughout Utah, Nevada and California and his housing subdivisions are numerous in the Salt Lake Valley area. He was proud to be a Marine having volunteered for service and served four years in World War II as a Marine Paratrooper. John took a number of young men under his wing, tutored them in the construction industry and gave them a start in business. He has four children whom he loved, and he wanted them to have a full and happy life. He wanted for his children the things he had gone without. His demeanor may have appeared tough to some, but for those who knew him, it was only to hide the tender and gentle heart he had inside. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; children, Sandy Speck (Sandra), Nila Horton (Jim Reidy), Strand Speck (Ilene) and Celeste Skinner (Tim); his grandchildren, Daren Speck, Tonya Unck, Arri Burgess, Devin Horton , Tyson Skinner, Spencer Skinner; also one great grandson, A. J. Unck. We will miss him but wherever he may be, it is sure that he is constructing something somewhere and taking pride in the finished product. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Goff Mortuary 8090 So. State St. where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 So.

To the Speck Family,

My father, Don Shepherd, sends his deepest sympathy at John's passing. He wishes he could express his condolence in person but his health does not permit it.
