Mattie Williams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6, 2005.
Williams, Mattie Belle (nee Robinson), was born to Madeline and Edward Robinson in Georgetown, Kentucky, March 29, 1921. She had one brother, Edward Robinson (nee deceased). She graduated from Ed Davis Elementary and High Schools before attending Kentucky State University. Mattie then migrated to Waukegan, IL, where she was employed at a leading department store. Bob Williams was on vacation with his father in Georgetown when he met Mattie. Their relationship grew after she migrated to Waukegan. Bob traveled by bus and train to visit Mattie Belle. The courtship blossomed into a marriage on June 7, 1953, when Mattie became Mrs. Mattie "Sweetie" Williams. Mattie worked at Carson Pirie Scott and the Chicago Board of Health, before she enrolled at Worsham School of Mortuary Science which she completed going on to become a licensed Funeral Director. Her strong faith was ever present when she united with the Beth Eden Baptist Church. Mattie was active in many organizations: Past President & Co-founder of the Beth Eden Seniors On The Go, The Matrons Club, The Sisterhood, The Ceramics Group and the Bridge Club, where she was given the name "Mother Superior". Because of her extremely active life in church and at the funeral chapel, Mattie reluctantly became an inactive member of the OES. Mattie was recently honored by the State of Illinois for 40 consecutive years as a Funeral Director. Mattie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert (Bob); daughter, JoAnn Jewel; and her devoted nephew, Edward Sidney Robinson. She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving granddaughter, Robyn; grandson, Damian; five great-grandchildren; loving godchildren; and a host of extended family and devoted friends. Mrs. Mattie Belle Williams will lie in state Thursday, August 4, 2005, 2 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2005, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at The Williams Chapel, 11053 South Vincennes Ave., Chicago, IL 60643. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2005. Visitation 10 a.m., Funeral Service 11 a.m., at Beth Eden Baptist Church, 11121 S. Loomis St., Chicago, IL 60643. For more info: 773-779-0155.

Robyn and Damian:

Mattie was highly respected in the Morgan Park community and Beth Eden Baptist Church for many years. I have known her all of my life and when my parents both passed within the same year, "Auntie Mattie" and "Uncle Bob" were there, being very supportive and loving to my family. I will always be grateful for the service they provided. They were also friends of my family and I will miss them both greatly. Remember that God is ever present and will be with you always. Be encouraged for He said in His scriptures that He will never leave you! We are praying with you and for you.

May God Bless You and Keep You,

Denise Johnson and the Meeks and Foster family.
