John Stechman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2012.
John Carl Stechman, 51, passed away after having struggled with a protracted illness Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at a San Luis Obispo hospital. John, who was born in Woodland, Calif., in 1960, and his son were visiting here for the holidays from Des Moines, Iowa, where they have lived since 1999. John was raised in San Luis Obispo from childhood, graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1978 with honors in FFA and attended Cal Poly and Cuesta College. He was successfully employed in restaurant, insurance, bonding and construction businesses in California, Hawaii and Iowa. In 1993, John married Sara Sulentic of Iowa. The following year, she gave birth to their son, John Peter. Peter, as he is known, was the "apple of his father''s eye" and best friends with his dad. Peter will attend college in California later this year. John generated a wealth of close friends and will be remembered for his personable nature and sense of humor. John was preceded in death (1981) by his sister Laurie; and is survived by his parents, John Vance and Dottie Jean; and Laurie''s twin sister, Jennifer Jean. Memorial services have been held. I was looking for John for years and then so sadly I saw this news. I went to High School at Atascadero High with John. He was a freshman I was a senior. He had the most infectious wonderful way about him and he was only 14 at the time. Later we played at Cuesta College on the tennis teams he was still just as genuine as ever. This year knowing AHS was having class reunions it made me start thinking about John and what a great person he was. I am so saddened to know he has gone. I am sure he is sitting in heaven making jokes as his was such a great and personable nature. I wish his wife and son many condolences for their loss and extend that to Johns mom and dad and his sister Jennifer. The world has lost a good man...

My heartfelt sympathy to the family. John, Kurt Jensen and I were close at Cal Poly. At we were all condo mates. He was full of energy with a self deprecating sense of humor and a extremely bright mind. We shared a entrepreneurial trail with the concept of "VanGogh's" wine bar across that was to be across from the Old Mission. The loss of his sister hit him hard and he wrestled with how to move forward. We had mutual insurance clients and worked with him shortly. He was a very diligent risk management professional. My condolences to Sara, Dottie, John, Jennifer, and John Peter. May God's light be upon you.

I was stunned and saddened to see the news of John's passing. I am so sorry for the struggles he and his family must have endured while living with his illness.

I had not been in contact with John since our high school years, but certainly remember him as a kind, funny and personable friend. My hope for comfort and strength goes out to his family.

Too soon, too soon. I knew John from SLO High and at Cal Poly. I remember his kindness. I remember him as a gentleman. I remember his easy smile, his strong, handsome face. I remember his touch of cowboy. Mostly, I remember how much he loved his sisters and his folks. God bless his son Peter who must continue his father's legacy without him. I am so sorry for your loss.

My prayers go out to your family. I graduated w/ John, but,I had not spoken to him since then. We connected about a yr. ago on Facebook & it was great to hear from him again. It sounded like he had a great life going.

John & I came from very different backgrounds, but always enjoyed talking with him in school. He was definitely a very high quality person & I always admired the way he handled himself & others. Be @ peace my friend...

Our condolences to John's family and parents on his passing. I remember John when he was a member of our early-morning-crew at the Cattaneo Bros. plant on Caudill street. He was friendly, bright, energetic and a very fine young man and a pleasure to be around. Rest in Peace.
